I’ve been trying to bring a displacement map from mudbox into Lightwave, and so far absolutely nothing is happening. The map exports, but when I load it into Lightwave it seems to have no effect.
I attached a screen shot.

i would use the nodal displacement route rather than the layers one…
check the version 9 content and look at the Zbrush displacement scene which
has everything you can pick apart… also verify your UV maps in modeler

You need normal displacement, the layered version doesn’t work. You’ll notice that despite using UV’s, the displacement axis is still planar - in your case, on Y.
As Bearfoot suggests, use the node option and download the ZBrush node setup which I believe is in the LW9 content. All you need to do is load the image and tweak the + and - values.
The sub-division order makes a difference too, I can’t recall but I believe that it might have to be set to first?
Thanks for the help so far. I set it up using nodes like described in the manual, but it’s still doing nothing.
I attached a screenshot in case the problem is clearly visible. I tried numerous subdivision orders; none made a difference. One thing that might be a problem is I split the imported mesh into two layers, resulting in a multi-layered UV map; does anyone know if that will cause problems?
Hey Meloncov, I think your node set up is back to front, I might be wrong as I am no expert because the nodes baffle me but try this setup.
The multiply node is the one you have to play with depending on Displacement map contrast and scene size. Mine is use about 0.1 on multiply but you might need to ramp it up or down, mess around with it. Subdiv order set to first and turn up your Display SubPatch Level, not too high though

Thanks, INFINATE, switching it over to luma got some result, but it seems to be expanding everything equally and ignoring the displacement map.
Without seeing your scene first hand it’s hard to know exactly whatis going on. Make sure your correct UV map is being used. Your subdiv is set to first and mess around with your Multiply settings. Other than that, perhaps attach a stripped down version of your scene and I or someone else could have a look and see what the problem is?
Perhaps someone else who has more experience in Mudbox might be able to help? as I know it’s exported Max differ slightly from ZBrush.
Perhaps posting a basic version of the scene might help. I have also been having some problems in this area and would be interested to solve this one as I am not to familiar with Mudbox.
