Digital Matte Painting question for Waterfalls on this picture

#1

I found this nice tutorial of a digital matte painting with photoshop and vue.

The picture is really amazing and the waterfalls too!
But…the waterfalls aren’t moving!!! How can you use that as a back picture if the waterfalls and mist and birds aren’t moving?

I’m new to matte painting and I’m going to do my bachelor thesis in 3D matte painting with main tool Vue, so I try to eliminate questions that I find while research.

The only ways I know to make moving waterfalls are Particle simulations with e.g. 3D Max or if you got a good moving waterfall Footage with good dark background you can add a moving waterfall.

So how is this picture used? Without the waterfalls moving? :hmm:

Tutorial site for that picture:

If this was going to be composited into a final shot, then yes you would need to replace the waterfall with either some live action footage of a waterfall or with a partie simulation. Getting it right in the matte painting is usually a quicker way to figure out the look and layout of the waterfall so that you can then replicate this with your particle sim.
