Hi!
This project, Carpe Chaos, is completely volunteer. I just graduated from UCSC, I’m paying off student loans, and it’s all I can afford to keep the website up and running. The project is supposed to be fun for all parties involved, and nobody is making any money. I want to say this upfront to avoid any possible misunderstanding. Eventually the aim is to make money, but it will likely be years before that happens, and I’m more focused on the creative and fun part right now.
So here’s what I’m doing: I want to create a comic book. This is very ambitious for me because I cannot draw at all. My aim is to create a well drawn comic book about alien races (no humans) learning about each other, fighting with each other, allying with each other, and so on. The stories I want to tell revolve around discovery, tolerance, war, and the politics involved when cultures collide. We already have a lot of history and several stories written, but our main focus at the moment is to visually define our universe.
So the project is a digital art comic book project.
I am looking for sketch artists to draw out and develop different creature, spaceship, technology, planet, and environment ideas. So far, we have a solid team of three people. I myself am the project leader and head writer; we have a creative genius who helped birth the project with me and came up with most of the crazy and cool things we have so far (Eric) (he can’t draw either), and one very skilled regular artist (Darby). The project needs more than one regular artist to move forward.
Please check out the project website! It’s http://www.carpechaos.com. You can check out what other artists have done so far in the gallery (and a couple of flyers we have made, they’re in the promotional materials album in the gallery), which is public. The work we do is organized into sub-forums; we keep our workspace hidden from the public. If you think you may be interested, e-mail me at jason[at]carpechaos(dot)com and I’ll give you the guest account login info so you can check out the stories we’ve come up with, and really our entire workspace (the hidden forum called “Artist’s Top Secret Lab.”) You can then check out how everything is organized and the way we interact with each other, and if you think you might be interested in contributing, make an account, and we’ll go from there.
So far, we have one completed race concept, and we are working on several others. After the races are defined, we’ll move on to their technology and environments, then character design, and finally we’ll start storyboarding comics. The final product is intended to be a full-page-size webcomic.
What do you, as an artist, have to gain from joining this project? Experience taking direction, working with other artists toward a common goal, contributing creative ideas to a group, and hopefully a lasting role in the project. When we get ready to begin publishing comics on the web, the project will need regular artists like yourselves to draw and ink the final product, and if you hang around for that long, you’re practically guaranteed that role, should you want it.
Thanks for reading this!
