Depth based saturation?

I’ve used a depth pass with a compound blur operator to achieve depth of field in a shot I’ve done in the past.

I was wondering, is it possible to employ a similar method to somehow control saturation in the scene so that using the depth pass, the farther the object is from camera, the less saturated it appears?

If so, how would you go about it?

Set your depth pass composite mode to saturation.
