Demoreel crits

#1

Hello everyone, Ive just finished the 3D part of my demoreel, and would like it if you could give some criticicsm.
Im a generalist, and this portion of the reel is to show that I can be “the entire pipeline” for a company… This will be followed by a 2D part, with pictures, layout examples and so on.

Please, proceed to my portfolio page , or follow the Youtube link

Hi Ingar

First thing I will say is don’t try and be the entire pipeline for a company. Certainly not yet anyway. Really have a think about what you want to do with your art, what you enjoy and then focus on getting really good at it. And if you are interested in lots of things then over time you’ll gradually learn from experience and might find yourself in that position down the track.

As far as the demoreel goes…I have to be honest and say that I wasn’t too impressed by it. Then I went to your portfolio page and was surprised by some of the work you had on there and I think it’s a shame that you aren’t focusing on that stuff. Your passion certainly seems to be in the 2d side of things so why are you trying to be the entire pipeline in a 3d production? One of the best pieces of advice I once got was “Don’t give anyone an excuse to not hire you”. Of course that’s easier said than done. But it’s a great way to look at your demoreel and filter out the stuff that really isn’t your best work. So in a nutshell I guess I’ll say that your demoreel just doesn’t seem to show your strengths or abilities.

Anyway I hope that kind of helps. Stick with it and good luck.

Thx for replying
Ive already been in this position before where Im the only art guy in a firm, and I see that more and more small to medium-sized companies see the need for one or two artists \ webdesigners, so I want to show that I CAN be the entire pipe, but Im not applying for a job as pipeline… The reel is pretty much the only animation I have in my portfolio, and thats the main reason I have one, but you are supposed to see the entire portfolio, like you did. And I guess that kind of works then …? Sorry to hear its not impressive though, of course, next to anyone who is full time specialists, it doesnt reach up at all, but I hope that an employer will see that Ive made a complete movie, and thats what I can offer.

No worries at all.

Yeah I can understand your point. I still think that you’re best to focus on your strengths in your reel because you can’t hope that people will visit your online portfolio. Your reel is your first impression on the company and if that’s not showing your best…then chances are they won’t bother going to your website. I’m not saying to not use the animation either…but at least put your strongest stuff at the start to get them into it.

That’s my thoughts anyway.
