Whenever I start Painter and either start a new project or open an existing image, the paper for the image is “leaves”.
I have no idea why that became the default paper. I don’t remember selecting it.
It’s particularly annoying because I’ll change it for an image I’m working on, close Painter, and when I open Painter again “leaves” is the paper again.
How can I change the default paper permanently to something more conducive to an initial sketch such as “Basic Paper”.
I’m using Painter V9.5.
I figure you don’t have the default Painter IX Papers library loaded as it doesn’t contain a Paper named “leaves”.

Whichever Papers library was loaded when you closed Painter, that Papers library will still be loaded when you launch Painter the next time, and the first Paper in the list will be the default Paper until you select another Paper.
Since the first Paper in the default Painter IX Papers library is Basic Paper, it will automatically remain the default Paper unless you select another Paper or load another Papers library.
If you want to load the default Painter IX Papers library, you’ll find it in this folder (at the end of these paths for Mac and Windows you’ll see the file names are different for Mac and Windows in Painter IX):
Mac - Applications > Corel Painter IX > Paper Textures
Windows - Program Files > Corel > Corel Painter IX > Painter.pap
If you want to be able to use Papers from multiple Papers libraries, you can use the Paper Mover to create a new custom Papers library and drag icons from the currently loaded Papers library into your custom Papers library. Then when you load your custom Papers library, you’ll have all of your favorite Papers available to use. (If your custom Paper library becomes too large, you may need to create multiple custom Papers libraries. The reason is there’s a file size limit that won’t allow you to add more Papers once that limit has been reached.)
To learn how to use the Paper Mover, read the following:
Painter IX Help > Help Topics > Contents tab > A Workspace Tour
On the right panel, click the link named Libraries and Movers and read that page.
Jinny,
Thanks so much for the reply.
I now remember loading different papers many months ago after buying a Painter Wow! book.
I apologize for bothering you (and anyone else on this forum) when I should have remembered.
I also want to thank you for the help on making a custom Papers library. That should help me tremendously in the future.
No apology needed. Even if you might have remembered loading other Papers libraries in the past without my help, maybe this thread will help others.
Yes, having custom art materials libraries is a big help and don’t forget to back them up somewhere save in case you ever need to uninstall and reinstall Painter.
