DAZ 3D Software Products Forum?

#1

Are there enough users of DAZ 3D products, such as Carrara, DAZ Studio, Bryce, Hexagon, etc. in CGSociety to warrant its own category for discussion?

I am a Carrara 7 Pro user, and I am hoping to find peers away from the prying eyes of DAZ in order to insure I am getting more objective information. DAZ does host their own forums.

I don’t know if hobby/enthusiast software really fits in with the high-end nature of CGTalk. Just my 2¢.

That is telling feedback, and I only have to wonder if this is a common thought. On the DAZ 3D forums, you might not expect to get such candid feedback.

My intent has been to come up to speed with Blender, but when I got a shot at a couple of seats of Carrara 7 Pro for cheap, I jumped on it. I agree it is not Maya or 3ds Max, but it does appear to be relatively powerful even for its list price of US$550 (of which I paid only a fraction.)

I am currently dabbling with the Unity game engine after exploring various options. I love the Torque 3D engine, but it is a bit out of reach at the moment. Not sure whether the Blender game engine is something to consider at this point or not.

My goal is to be able to do some basic 3D animations to support my webmaster responsibilities at work, along with my marketing work. In the long run, I think there is opportunity for applications in serious gaming and sims, so I don’t necessarily need high poly, photorealistic modeling for that. The mech engineers will provide STP files for our products, so I don’t need to worry about modeling them, though I might want to polish them a bit.

I believe the Chinese company that developed Age of Armor, currently in open beta, used Carrara for their modeling.

PS - I definitely agree with your implied statement that I am not worthy.

The best place for Carrara discussion outside of the DAZ3D forums is at Renderosity

It’s a shame that a lot of CGTalk members seem to feel this way. I’m not convinced though. Even the rules of this forum say “It’s a place to talk about all things related to computer graphics.” All things

If you look at the current adverts here they are mainly for Vue and Bryce. Would those houses really spend the money advertising here if there wasn’t a market?

But, alas, I also have to agree, if you want honest help and friendly chat without “down the nose” quips and comments, then Renderosity is the place to go.

As you point out, Bryce is a DAZ3D product.

BTW, I have Bryce 7.0 PLE, and installed the Bryce 5.5 free edition. 7 looks just like 5.5 but with a few more “widgets” floating about. Since I want the option of using my work commercially, I thought it would be good to have 5.5 on hand.

I hear that Bryce has fallen considerably behind Vue, though they used to be very parallel.

I do have Vue 8.5 PLE installed and dabbled with it some. I may eventually explore the Vue Pioneer with paid add-ons if I have a compelling need for landscaping outside Carrara 7 Pro and Bryce 5.5. I have been looking at a side project for a government contact that might involve the need for good landscaping tools.
