That is telling feedback, and I only have to wonder if this is a common thought. On the DAZ 3D forums, you might not expect to get such candid feedback.
My intent has been to come up to speed with Blender, but when I got a shot at a couple of seats of Carrara 7 Pro for cheap, I jumped on it. I agree it is not Maya or 3ds Max, but it does appear to be relatively powerful even for its list price of US$550 (of which I paid only a fraction.)
I am currently dabbling with the Unity game engine after exploring various options. I love the Torque 3D engine, but it is a bit out of reach at the moment. Not sure whether the Blender game engine is something to consider at this point or not.
My goal is to be able to do some basic 3D animations to support my webmaster responsibilities at work, along with my marketing work. In the long run, I think there is opportunity for applications in serious gaming and sims, so I don’t necessarily need high poly, photorealistic modeling for that. The mech engineers will provide STP files for our products, so I don’t need to worry about modeling them, though I might want to polish them a bit.
I believe the Chinese company that developed Age of Armor, currently in open beta, used Carrara for their modeling.
PS - I definitely agree with your implied statement that I am not worthy.
