day and night matte painting

#1

Hey everyone , it has been a while since I have posted anything here. I have been focusing on learning more about concept art and havent really been doing any matte paintings. But I started this one a week or two ago.

My main focus with this study is to extend the plate and make some interesting mountain scene and also practise my day for night skills since I have barely touched the subject.

Plate:

Daytime matte:

night matte:

Edit: here are the other references I also used to create the mountains, the bg building and the foreground building on the right.

There is still much that i have to work on with both of these but I thought some good c&c from the community would help

Thanks guys!

Hi matt,
Nice piece of work! Good collection of reference images & were nicely composed into the matte-painting!

cheers,

Nice! I might say the white ‘spots’ on the stone may be a bit too bright for me, but i may feel differently once there were flickering torches added to the scene.

nice job!

I really like what you did , the night shot is very convincing.

But check the perspective on the castle extension, it has some obvious problems. And you should also fix the white spots on the rocks.

But in therms of color, I love the night shot.

Good job!

rianchen: thanks man!

CodeNothing: thanks for the crit man , i will work on taking out those white spots. And I am thinking about doing some flame work for this peice as well. Though I do not know much if any 3d effects, I think i will just paint about 10 lighting layers and have them flicker in after effects.

aksu: hey thanks for the crits. I have that background castle using a different point of perspective on the horizon line then the rest of the buildings but I will check that out, it could have moved without me noticing. And those white spots will be gone

Here are some closeups if you guys are interested in seeing some of the paint detail I added.

Thanks again everyone!
