JM-art - thanks! i don’t think it’s particularly the 2d programs but just trying to do 2d on the computer. a cintiq might work better for me, but i’m sure if i used it more I’d get used to it. although also also get frustrated with just a pencil and paper.

Giom - thanks!

NR43 - thank you!

here are a few things i’m working on for a reel, feel free to critique. i’m curious to see if anyone can guess the name of the actor the bust is of (i don’t think he’s very well known)

I’ve got no idea who the guy is…?

But the female nude is fantastic! Right down to the little markers on the floor… I just love that! The hair too, is looking great. Did you use polies for that?

Also, the lighting is very moody but arty at the same time.

Little details like the skin folds where the arms and breasts push together, helps to present it as real.

Love your work!

Giom

Hi Daniel…

Great to see you opening up a sketchbook thread in this neck of the woods.
I really enjoy your work, and the classical approach you incorporate into it and the training you’ve had that shows up in it.
You capture and express feeling/emotion in your works, which is 90 percent of the battle won. The remaining 10 percent is just technical stuff which anyone can achieve with enough practice.
No crits from me…I’m just looking forwad to seeing where the journy leads you to.
It will be easier to follow your progress in this forum than over at Z Brush Central, where images and people zoom by at the speed of light…
Really looking forward to seeing this new sketchbook of yours grow along with it’s owner…

Wow that woman is amazing. She looks so real with the color and the settings around her.

Let’s see… the guy looks like Bruce Willis when he is wearing that disguise in 12 monkeys.

Giom - thanks! i’m glad you like the hair, alot of people didn’t seem to like it (i think it ws my no. 1 critique) i used shave and a haircut, but i think i might try something else when i render it for my reel. glad you like to markers and lighting. i felt with that pose it’d most likely be posed for a class/ drawing/ painting, so i wanted it to have that feel. this ended up being one of my main references for her

SpiritDreamer - thank you very much, i appreciate it! i’m not really sure where my work is going, so i’m a bit excited myself to see where it leads. right now i’m sort of figuring out what i don’t want to do, at least with regard to my traditional sculpture work.

aggie93 - thank you! It’s not Bruce, although looking at photos i saw online, some shots did make Bruce look a bit like the actor I’m going for. i think i only saw 12 monkey once, when i was about 12. anyway the actor I’m doing isn’t as known as someone like Bruce Willis. i don’t really expect anyone to figure out who it is, but I’m hooping someone will surprise me.

this is something i did maybe 2 years ago. whenever i end up doodling without any reference, this is the sort of stuff i generally end up drawing, eyes, lips and faces. my sketchbooks generally have stuff like this and a lot of stuff that just looks like scribbles.

#26

I was just reaching for a guess.

Are your sketches digital or traditional and scanned in?

#27

my sketches are just scanned in. the 1/2 done painting of the woman is the only digital 2d piece.

#28

small update. just the blocking of the pose, still needs a lot of work but this is essentially the pose I’m going with, but perhaps some minor changes, we’ll see.

i haven’t worked on the bust (his hair is slicked down a bit more), but i think this in material/ lighting is looks more like him. any other guesses on the actor?

#29

Your sculpture is fantastic. Love the 3d work too; my only crit with the full color woman is how her hair looks in the back, too perfect. I would have bigger clumps of hair to give it more dimension as well as some loose strands. Aqqie93’s response has me looking at Bruce Willis now in your sculpt head.:stuck_out_tongue:

Hi Daniel

Nice job on the centaur so far…Great pose:thumbsup: Maybe make his hands just a tad bigger and more beefed up with muscle and tendon…will add more of a sense of strenght and stress as he pulls that bow string back, and will also add to the power of the whole piece I think…Just a passing thought that may be useful to you, I don’t know, but thought it worth mentioning…What is he going to be aiming at anyway…just curious…
I like those face sketches that you created without references by the way…Great way to test yourself and discover your unknowns…I don’t know what books you have, but I highly recommend DYNAMIC FIGURE DRAWING by BURNE HOGARTH…Alot of great stuff in that book on how to create whole figures in deep space with forshotening, overlapping and laceing of volumes ect…It takes a classical approach to creating the human figure in motion, and how to create it properly with and without refference…All the secrets that Michelangelo and the other great sculptors perfected in regards to drawing the human figure in deep space and in motion…GREAT BOOK…Just thought it worth mentioning, in case you weren’t aware of it yet…It’s not that expensive ether…you can get it on the internet…ALIBRIS.COM has good prices…I buy alot of art books used from them…
I have all of his books…and they have proven to be very useful over the years…Worth their weight in gold when it comes to solving problems that arise in a complicated figure pose or whatever.
Really looking forward to seeing the progress in your sketchbook…

ha, well apparently firefox automatically signed me into my old account by accident. anyway this is the account i use now.

System404 - Thank you!her hair ended up being the number one critique, although mostly about it casting a shadow or looking like a wig. hair seems to be my nemesis in all mediums, but i’m planning on redoing her hair for my reel.

SpiritDreamer - Thanks! i know what you mean about the hands. i haven’t really touched them yet, i just posed them quickly so the fingers weren’t straight out, been mostly working on the torso/ chest/ arms. taking a bit of a break to go back to the making the rest of that actors body/ clothes. i am aware of the Hogarth books, i’ve taken a look at them before, but haven’t read much or practiced their techniques. i don’t have much in the line of art books, i have a few anatomy books and 2 Michelangelo books i received as gifts. for the centaur pose, i’ve attatched my main reference, it’s a sculpture from Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina, but i couldn’t find out much more about it.

#32

here’s an update on the actor, working on his body. stills needs work. i’m thinking i’ll probably post who the actor is soon, since it’s very slim anyone will figure it out.

also here’s a little lip/ mouth study i did in stone. was my first time using a chisel (i only used rasps on the nose study). i’m hoping to get some money so i can try sculpting a whole bust in stone. we’ll see.

#33

Hi, the portraits of the woman are master pieces. The actor isn´t johnny depp? You said isn´t realy famous so it couldn´t be, i guess…but i find it very similar to him.

Cheers.

#34

thank you very much! no, it’s not Mr. Depp. i think the only people he might be recognizable to are people who are really into independent and foreign(non-american) films. he was the lead in an Oscar nominated film

#35

little break from demo reel stuff, just playing a bit.

#36

well oddly, i may have a job doing some 2d work so i need to start working in photoshop more. it seems like the hardest things for me drawing in PS is finding reference for what i want and color. i fair ok at mixing with real paint, but the digital stuff so far seems like picking colors which plays with my head a little. so i may be posting alot more 2d stuff.

anyway i started this study of part of a Bouguereau painting to try and work on color & shading in PS.

#37

Looks like a great start to me!

#38

thanks aggie!

I was notified two weeks ago that my sitting man sculpture was a finalist in the ARC Salon, but i wanted to wait until i had a link to the full posting before i posted it here. have a look at the rest of the works on there. 2009/10 ARC Salon Results

also, i worked a bit on what started as my first digital painting. i’d not sure what else to do to it, but i don’t really like it. seems sort of boring, perhaps the lighting is too flat for what i like. anyway, critiques are very welcome.

Wow!
The entries in every category are simply mindblowing.
Congratulations on making it to the final! You must be very proud to see your sculpt surrounded by all those other great works.
