Daniel Peteuil - Anatomy and figure studies - 2D/3D

#1

so awhile ago i had a thread under the name YanSan in the WIP 3D stills forum. someone mentioned i should post some stuff here, and i realized the anatomy forum would be a a much better fit, and i could post work other than digital 3d stuff. so i’ve created a new user name (to reflect my real name (Daniel Peteuil)) and i’m starting a thread here. i’m planning on posting the older anatomy stuff i had originally posted in the other thread, then start posting my newer works. i look forward to participating more in this forum.

i don’t draw all that much, so this is the last finished drawing i did back in May 2008. i probably need to draw a bit more, but i’ve included a few sketches i’ve done in the last half of 2009. most are sketches of other drawings or sketches.

#3

i also started my first digital painting ever during the summer, but only got this far, hopefully i can finish sometime. i haven’t done any traditional painting since high school, i need to get on that as well.

Welcome - beautiful ecorche and 3D work! Where did you do the ecorche? It looks like the kind that they do at AAU. The rendering of the man’s face is also really nice. Hope to see more of your stuff here.

#5

thanks Rebecca! yes, it is from AAU. i was there for 3 semesters. the charcoal drawing was also done there. i may upload some more recent work a little later.

#6

so this is a sculpture i did in october. i ended up submitting it to the ARC Salon, although i’ll be lucky to even be a finalist in that. not sure when the results are usually announced though.

#7

Great start for your sketchbook! I’m impressed by the sculpture. Keep going!

#8

Beautiful! Good luck in the competition.

batte812 - thanks.
rebecca - thanks! i’ll need it.

this is my most recent work, finished just yesterday to enter into evolvecg’s hunter challenge. not sure if the nudity will hurt my chances, but it didn’t really seem like people were that into the piece in general. both creatures were my own designs/ ideas. i wanted him to be more along the lines of a natural wild animal, hence the no clothes or accessories. his weapons are a natural part of his body. i kept the reproductive bits because i didn’t want to not have that part of the anatomy just because it’s uncomfortable for some. creatures need to reproduce as well.

Very good sculptures. I like you sketching too. The last 3d digital is cool. what software are you using?

#11

Hi Daniel… welcome aboard!! Awesome stuff you’ve got here!
I love the creature design on the last post!
It’s true, the “reproductive bits” may affect your chances… That’s the general trend, as far as I have seen in challenges. Anyways, it shouldn’t stop you from sculpting the way you like!
Waiting to see more of your work! :bounce:

aggie93 - thanks! i mostly use Maya and Zbrush, although i’m currently learning to model in 3dsmax as well.

Anand - thanks! i’m a big fan of your work, so it means alot. i’m glad you like the creature, I decided to name him Kalapet, after the town near Pondicherry were i was in november/ december. I wouldn’t mind the nudity affecting my chances if they’re weren’t some nice prizes to the winners, but oh well. not sure how good my chances are anyway.

hopefully i’ll have some new work up soon.

hi man, lovely works you got there  .
The man portrait is stunning, i can’t even see a brush stroke on it

#14

I tried Maya and found it very difficult to use, especially as a 2D artist. The Zbrush was easier but my trial use ran out. Now that I spent so much on the Cintiq, I will have to wait to buy anything else for a while.

Lovely work. The clay sculptures especially are superb. Inspiring stuff.

I like your modern take on classical work.
The CGI girl in the Birth of Venus pose looks very contemporary and a little like Beyonce.
The alien dude looks like that Archaic Greek Sculpture called The Calf Bearer.

#16

nice sculpts man…liked the traditional ones more…

#17

collings - thanks!
aggie93 - it’s funny, i feel i have a similar problem using digital 2D programs.
Tonik - Thanks! The Calf Bearer was actually sort of in the back of my mind as i was making that last one.
dscavenger - thanks!

Wow!..the clay sculpture is amazing, and that first digital painting of the female is going very well, the tones of the body are nice. And the Zbrush works are great too.

About what you said of 2d programs, for sketching there is nothing as simple, fast, and smooth as Sketchbook pro from Autodesk, isn´t expensive either.

keep posting, is inspiring to see your art.

Hey, it’s good to see this subject open again.

The sculpt of the female nude is so well defined now, it really looks like real sculpture. The pose too, it very natural and balanced.

Keep 'em coming!

Giom

Whoa!

Awesome sculpts man!

I can only add to the superlatives everyone already mentioned…
