Cyborg Back Flip

#1

Hey, I’m starting to get a bit of a dead-eye looking at this. It’s a simple back flip I’m doing for a VFX colleague.

You can find the video here.
And see it on youtube here.

Any help or critiques are appreciated. There are still a few areas that don’t look right to me but I can’t pinpoint them anymore.

Let me know if the link is broken or if you would like to see it in a different format.

Hi there

It looks quite good. A nice model as well.

The only comment I have is, that I’d change the timing a bit. He seems to fall a bit too slow, removing some of the weight. I’d steal some frame between the backflip and his contact, and give it to the backflip itself, so it has a bit more hangtime and then falls fast.

Give it a whirl and see if it makes it any better

Cheers

I’m glad you said something about that doffer I had a hard time telling if the speed was right. I’ll fix that up and repost, thank you.

I made the fixes as well as a few other. The landing feels like it has more impact now, thank you.

Here’s the update.

Hi,

I hope that it’s not too late to check the animation again before going to VFX. Watch this reference video. It pretty much sums up what I am going to say.

Monkey back flip

  1. To increase momentum the hands will go beyond the head. Most times the hand goes back first before the head and the spine.

  2. The tail is for balance. Once the contact is made at the ground the tail has to come down to stabilize the robot and then it can come up.

  3. A little more hang time and lesser time to land would be nice and display weight.

  4. Have you tried to do a back flip? Before you jump you will begin to crouch, just check the position of your arms and the elbows. They will fold in and move back.

That’s all for now. I am not sure about the tentacles. Maybe a it may be clear after the main animation has been fixed.

Good animation. Cheers!

Update: Forgot the feet
5. The feet are in a pose for a back flip that lands pretty much at the same place. Your back flip goes way back. Therefore in a natural back flip the one feet will be in front providing the majority of the force upwards and the other feet placed at the back(this will leave the floor last) with a bend at the knee will provide for the force to move back. If you have doubts ask someone who can do a back flip and record it.

Sorry about the late post bad-j. I was able to incorporate a few of your suggestions in before passing it off. The foot thing was a really good call. And I never thought to use a monkey as reference. I appreciate the help.

If the VFX guy gets around to finishing it before this thread disappears I’ll be sure to post the results.

Great to hear that it was helpful. Do you have a playblast of the animation?
