Custom label IDs: Maya to AE

#1

Hey guys

So I am working in a CG house that uses Maya/AE…so this is a 2-part question?

Ive looked around but havent dug up tooo much on custom ID passes.
Are there any comprehensive tuts or websites that talk about this and sort of explain how they are set up? And used?

There ara some tuts for RGB masks…but thats easy…I want to know how to take advantage of the 255 mattes available…and render this to an EXR.
I know this is possible…just dont know how.

We use AE to composite right now nd so weve been basically setting up a Pure RGB layer that we then can take into AE and use the “Set matte” filter(to green, red or blue). But this limits us to basically 3 mattes per pass. Seems like there is a better way, but Im not sure what that is. Ive seen a downloadable macro for shake that allows and user to also use pure CMY values…making 6 usable mattes per pass. But I need something like this for AE.

DO we need a plug in for AE to make these passes more useful, or are we just stuck. My boss isnt gonna spring for Nuke(yet) …so were needing a solution with AE only.

Ill post this in the maya section too…

Wrong tool. Effect --> Channel --> Shift Channels. Combine with Levels to define additional thresholds and you can use mix colors such as yellow, orange, magenta. Please see this article for some more insights:

Can’t help you with your other problem - the last time I used Maya was before they introduced render layers/ render elements.
