Use a 3D program.

There are some things you can do in After Effects - but those looked like they were from Maya or 3DS Max. Another method would be to use live footage shot against a green screen.

But - if you’re insisting on using AE in that manner here are some plug-ins/tutorials:

I’m not sure if the curtain plug-in will do what you just showed, but they have a free download/trial so it would be worth it just to check it out.

AE sans plugs: use animated masks, mesh warp, and fractal noise .
Or get Panopticum Curtains plug-in.

looking pretty much like the effect on the north kingdom side, probably less springy.

…you’ll definitely need a 3D program to get a realistic cloth look…

I used Cinema4d…bumped the simulation to AfterEffects and exported a flashvideo with transparency that has been imported to the flash timeline.
