CS4 - multy threaded?

Hi,

I´d like to know if filters in CS4 are able to make use of several Procesors. (especially the liquify filter)

I made a test with CS4 and it doesn´t seem to use several Cores. So It takes about 15 minutes to calculate the liquify result…
But here and there I read that cs4 is capable to make use of multiple cores.

Does anyone know what is correct.
It would be important for me to know so that I can decide wheter to buy a quad core or maybe better get a good dual core processor.

Any hint would be appreciated.

CS4 itself is most definitely capable of using multiple cores, dependending on the process.
The plugin is a different story, especially if it s 3rd party.

Not everything will take advantage of the multi-core.

With that being said, if it is not too much a matter of budget, go for the Quad… no doubt.

It’s also good to note that CS4 takes advantage of your GPU.

I thought in the case of single threaded filters it might be better to chose a dual Prcessor with higher frequency of each core so that the liquify filter for instance would take less time to calculate. This was the most annoying thing I noticed so far.

But anyway I chose a quadcore and in case it turns out too slow I will have to wait some time for a better one.

Does the liquify filter use more than one core ? I am using a mac pro early 2008 with 10Gb ram and running Vista Ultimate SP1 64 bit on that.

never saw CS4 use more than one core while applying the Liquify Filter.

Is there a Link where I can see what areas in CS4 are Multi threading aware ?

you are the third person now that confirms that CS4 doesn´t Use more than 1 core when applying the liquify filter.
so I think that I´m not doing anything wrong. And I believe that it´s just like that.

As far as the link goes. I haven´t found anythig like that.
In any case you can run the taskmamager an see if one core is used much more than the others when performing a command, filter etc…This way you can at least find it out piece by piece.

I’m on XP x64, quad core and 6GB. While the liquify filter is open, there is definitely more processing going on with all four cores, cores 2 and 4 stand out a little. When processing everything, cores 2 and 4 spike out, while 1 and 3 remain at their previous levels until everything is finished and goes back to the initial state.

I´m now owner of a quadcore. And I observerd basically the same.

In the end doubling the processor Power and Ram (4 gigs now)
There is no significant speed increase while processing the result (and rendering in the liquify window)

thats really interesting. but at the same time I run out of explanations why this filter needs so much system power (at least with 8kx8k docs) and above all: time.
If RAM desn´t help and none of the 4 cores is used mare than 10 %… what is it then?..
