CS4 | mesh painting | need tips please ...

Hey guys,

So in Photoshop CS4 we have the ability to import an object and paint away in a similar fashion to bodypaint.

However, when i open a simple obj the rendering/shaders are completely off the mark, the whole thing has some strange smoothing going on, which might work well for characters but not for industrial design! then the gloss and shininess are up at 100% …

And i can’t seem to get a simple self illuminated shader, the lights are pretty annoying, ie if i want to sample an area to paint elsewhere it also samples the light value!

soooo, any good tips for getting a mesh into photoshop to paint over then back into the 3d program?

Thanks,
Dave.

I don’t think that you need to pull the 3D object back into the 3D program. Ignore the lights, I would only use Photoshop to paint the texture and that is all I would use that for. The lighting and whatnot is really just for your preview purposes. As far as the mesh not coming in with sharp detail - it might be the amount of vertices you have? IDK…

PSCS4 is relatively new and so far I’ve only used it on organic modeling, but the mesh on the items I have used it for has been low poly. But - I have to say that it is a darn site better than what I’ve experienced with bodypaint, not knocking bodypaint - but if you are familiar with one program it’s easier than learning a new program.
