CS1 and Win7 64bit

#1

Hi,

I have a normal Adobe Creative Suite CS1 pack from year 2004 running on XP 32bit system.

I´m about to move to 64bit Win7. Will my old Creative Suite run on the new system?

Thanks.

I’m using several 32 bit programs on Windows 7 64 bit. They all seem to work with no problems. All 32 bit programs are installed in a programs folder labeled x86. 64 bit programs are installed in the regular programs folder. I was a little apprehensive about migrating to a 64 bit OS, but it doesn’t seem to be an issue at all.

Thanks,

Good to hear!

I heard that if Photoshop CS1 is running on Win7 64bit 8Gb RAM-system, it will only be able to use 4Gb of RAM. And the reason I´m buying a new system is that I get a lot “not enough ram”-issues on my current system with photoshop.

So I have decided to update to CS4 which I heard can use more that 4Gb when used on a 64bit system.
The question is : I have quite a lot plugins for my Photoshop CS1 (Frischluft Flair, DofPro, Neat Image…). Will they work with CS4 in 64bit system?

dof pro does on my system.

Most of your plug-ins (probably all) are 32 bit and can only be used with the 32 bit version of Photoshop CS4, which btw is automatically installed on a 64 bit system along the 64 bit version of CS4. My experience is that most companies that offer these plug-ins have done very little to bring out 64 bit versions, which is quite annoying actually. Your Neat Image however is available in 64 bit as far as I know.

i dont think there is any 64 bit version of cs4. adobe has not yet changed to 64 bit programs, they are just compatible with 64 bit systems.

No, there’s definitely a 64-bit Photoshop CS4. I’ve been using it for a few months now (and have to load an older version to use some plug-ins).

Yes, same for me: I’ve been running 64bit Photoshop for almost a year now - very handy on a system with 12gb ram to play with. Opening huge files does not hit the performance of Photoshop anymore (especially working in 16/32bit colour modes). And I can confirm that the 32bit version is installed alongside the 64bit one, as well as that lots of plugins only work in 32bit Photoshop. Which often means a quick trip to 32bit, and back to the 64bit version.

True if you are using a Mac - not true if you are using a 64bit Windows machine
Apple decided not to support 64bit for the Carbon API (which Adobe is using), but only for Cocoa applications. Adobe is forced to convert the whole thing to Cocoa now. That’s why there’s no 64bit version for Mac (yet). They say it is coming with CS5, though. It might not be as stable as the Windows version, though: I have read that Adobe has to convert a lot of code to Cocoa - a major effort.
