CryEngine 3 - LOTR Balrog Reveal Cinematic

#1

Hey folks. I’m working on a new cinematic taking place in the Lord of the Rings universe. I had this Balrog model lying around in my archives and thought, why not make a cinematic sequence with it. Furthermore I wanted to get more familiar with the particles in CE3 and see how close I could come to the quality of the first movie’s sequence in a realtime game-engine although it is not meant to be an exact copy of it. Hope you enjoy!

wow this is seriously well done! Cry3 too love it

my only crits would be the cracked floor feels a bit shiny and the fragments seem to lack some finer detail - dont know if you can break it up in places with some smaller particle debris.

When he jumps out the animation here seems to suffer a bit - feels a bit basic/first-pass. Would have been nice if the column destruction was a bit more offset… almost as if he lands on one foot first then the other a moment later… as a result one arm hits then the other offsetting the resulting destruction.

Finally as the cam moves in some slight cam shake would be ace too as if the exhaled vapours are affecting the camera.

overall tho truly superb work! Love to do something of this calibre in UDK/Cry

Looks really epic!
I would suggest to delay the camera look at the ground untill a few cracks have formed because the first time I watched it I was a little unsure of what was going on.

Thanks man. Are there any tutorials you recommend on how to create cinematics inside of the Crytek engine, like creating cameras, recording, flyovers and fly throughs? cut scenes etc?

I think the manual provides a comprehensive guide on how to realize a cutscene:
