Critiques for my Demo Reel

Hey Folks,

I am attending the Centre for Arts and Technology, Halifax campus - taking the 3D Game Animation course which consists of 8 semesters (2 years). Linked below is my 7th semester demo reel. I do not have any previous experience or education in the entertainment industry.

The 8th semester is like a giant lab (with the exception of a few classes) which we use to work on our reel for 3 months. I’m looking for critiques on my current reel to better my work so that I can have the best reel possible for graduation! :slight_smile:

The presentation is good, it has the right length about it.

I know you’re a generalist, but I think for the environment model it would be worth telling what the model is for. Is it a game environment? Is it Arch-viz? Is it a scene model for a 3d film? I’d be left guessing, and the answer the viewer comes up with would be different depending on who you sent it to. Architects like clean renderings of their buildings/rooms. Game dev people would be asking you about the poly-count of the room, the shaders you used, and the size of the textures. It’s probably alright for a film, but the lighting could be better.

You show a real weakness with texturing, so where it’s not really necessary or noticeable, it’s probably best to go without (like with the robot).

The car could probably look a lot better with just better lighting and shaders… Look around the internet for car photography tips, trust me, they’ll help a lot even though you’re working with 3d models.

Your animation is pretty stiff, here’s something someone else posted on this forum that should give you an idea of the amount of work you should expect to do to get a good result.

Also, at the end it wasn’t clear if you were the modeler on that ship, it had a different name on there.

Also be more clear as to what job you want—generalist doesn’t typically include game design. You’re about the same ability in both modeling and animation so I’d say pick one and focus on that. And then figure out what industry you want to go into, film, games, archviz or whatever. I think these days it’s very hard to be a generalist.
