Creation of Lightning bolts, Blender 2.49

#1

Just looking for any tips on the creation of lightning bolts using Blender 2.49. was trying to use the Tutorial here http://www.falgor.net/tutorials/lightning/ but its for 2.40 so it seems some things have changed. pretty much just learning to use blender right now.

Edit:

through some messing around i think i solved the issue…

so far i think it looks pretty good, simple test of a “Lightning Rifle”.

ok this is what i managed to get with particle systems in 2.49 how would i get the reflective surface to show the stream. simply shut off raytracing?

You should have been able to follow through on this tutorial with 2.49b.

I happen to use compositing a lot when building up something like this, because I really like to be able to “tweak it later” and I’m not doing real-time stuff anyway. You can build up the final shot with the work-flow of: “Okay, what I’ve got so far is good (and I don’t have to repeat it), so now let’s try adding this bit of spice to the soup-pot. If I don’t like it, I can always tweak it, or just take it out again …”

It wasn’t until node-based compositing, materials and textures came fully into their stride that you could seriously contemplate doing something like that.

I think halos can’t be mirrored so you would have to either duplicate the lightning bolt, mirror its geometry on the world plane and make it visible via compositing
or
you could render out one halo and apply it as a billboard texture to your particle system.
