Creating Stereo 3D images - Is Modo for me?

#1

I’ve been doing 2D digital graphics for ages, but I’ve held off getting into 3D stuff, even though I love the work I see from others, because I found the learning curve a bit intimidating. Just recently, however, a friend has convinced me to give it a go.

Now, I’ve been using my iPad as a ‘digital portfolio’ since I first got it, and something I recently purchased is another reason I’ve decided to try my hand at 3D. I bought this screen overlay thing called a GRilli3D, and it allows you to see Stereo 3D images without wearing any kind of glasses (it’s actually very cool), and I’d like to try creating some ‘3D’ 3D art that I could display on the tablet. As a result, I’ve been posting on a number of forums to see if anyone more experienced than I, could offer some advice (without much success, I’m afraid).

I’m already aware, that to accomplish this, I’ll need to use two cameras, and I’ll have to be able to set how far apart they sit and at what point their viewing angles converge. I’ll need to render each camera’s image separately, and then create a vertical column interlace of the two within Photoshop (although, if that stage could be handled within Modo, I guessing that might be quicker?).

So, with that in mind, does anyone have any opinion as to Modo’s suitability for creating Stereo 3D images? Can Modo do a two camera setup? Does it offer any special benefits when attempting to realize these kinds of 3D images? I know that Modo renders outstanding images for 2D output, so I assume this would hold equally true for Stereo 3D, right? Bottom line - taking into account it’s ability to do this kind of work, it’s learning curve, it’s price - is Modo the right choice for me?

If anyone has any thoughts or opinions on the matter, I’d be happy to hear them.

Thanks,
David

You can do it in Modo, there is a camera setting for this:

You don’t have to set up two different cameras yourself. I have never used this feature in Modo though, so I can’t give any precise info about it. There is a video tutorial on the luxology website, check it out: http://www.luxology.com/training/video.aspx?id=224

Thanks ezekial66,

That's a very cool feature for my purposes. And I'm glad to see that it's available in Modo. I've been leaning in the direction of Modo for a number of reasons, and this adds another BIG factor in its favor.

I have another question that you (or anyone?) may be able to help with. The Grilli3D overlay screen for the iPad, that I mentioned originally, uses a 1 pixel, vertical column interlace of the two (left eye / right eye) images to create the 3D effect. Would it be possible to create the interlaced image within Modo? Perhaps by using a mask?

Either way, thanks again for taking the time to answer a newbie's question.
