I am looking to make heat waves coming off an air craft so that it deforms the view of anything behind it. how do i do this?

I think get the tinderbox plugins trial.
In one of the three boxes there is a Operator called “T_Heathaze” included.

A simple noise operator connected to a displace operator will do just about the same thing. Use a B&W noise and set the displace to luminance.

Yes you are right.
In the past Tinderbox was also available for combustion, but some filters are not 100 % compatible with it so far I know.
I have tried the Heathaze at a company some weeks ago because they had after effects and combustion. It worked for me.
You could also try using combustion’s own particles and then feed this in to a displace operator and maybe a little blur. work’s a treat

I tried it with 3D Max’s particles systems with different colour and the Displace Modifier in Combustion, worked great !
