Creating a Trail of smoke

#1

I want to create a trail of smoke like you see from a missle or Rocket taking off. Any ideas. Strickly within vUe. I know how to do it in LW using Hypervoxels. I was thinking I could do it with clouds,

I dont think you will have much success doing this Vue only. At least i can´t think of a fast and doable way inside vue with clouds. I remember a www.geekatplay.com tutorial where vladimir pointed out a way using alpha planes and a pre rendered avi file.

if you know LW, just do it there. Don’t waste time trying to half-ass it in Vue, which won’t do a good job anyways. Render it in LW and then combine in post.

I think I figured it out. I wanted to copy some of the Samples seen here, but soon discovered things like the Flares, smoke, fire and explosion, though excellent, may be a little over dramatized. Discoverd with flares I can use a simple animated FIRE\Light and enable Blue Anamophic Streak and Smoke and Dust in light beam. For exhaust from that HUGE rocket I can use SEVERAL animated clouds with couple iluminated light going on and off. For missles I can link a light to the back of a missle and crank up anamorphism to 10 with blue anamorphic streak enabled. Might add an alpha plane Will post some samples soon.

Metaclouds for smoke work great,
turn OFF send/recieve shadows or they slow the hell down on rendering if close to camera, I mean really slow and about 100 or 200 metres or less distance.

Lens flares work good, as you note

I also use elongated spheres, booleaned, or meshes made elsewhere, for engine exhausts, and alpha planes for Photoshop imges of fire and sometimes Vue effects, also figures nice way to make Volumetric fire, but Monsoon, from 3DCOmmune came up with a better way to do it than me.

please note I have a freebie item on Cornucopia 3D for plasma bolts, ion engine exhuasts and plasma explosions

Sounds like a post effect would be much faster and more flexible.

Check out the last two movies on this page. They are all done in 2D with After Effects. And the render time would only be a few minutes. (I have both plug-ins used and they are very fast)

those look great…but I don’t have After Effects, I want to stay in VUE. Any solutions.

I just hope Vue adds smoke and smoke trails(particle emitter) in their next release. There is so much VUE could be used for if that were to happen… all of the IRONMAN sky\cloud sceens could be done in exclusively in VUE…even animating him. Come on E-ON…make it happen.

Comp. Seriously.
