I would like to create a polygon from vertices in 3ds Max. When I try to create the polygon it says illegal new face. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The edges must be open to which you create it, and you should create it counter clockwise.

A polygon can not be created from an edge that has two faces.
So you can split the edge into two open edges first.
