Create a mesh from Sub-d?

#1

Hi,

Is it possible (in XSI 7.5) to create a polygon mesh from a subdivision surface object - to “freeze” it into a high resolution polygonal object?

Thanks.

Make subdivision…

Oh wow, cool. And I thank you.

I guess you meant Create>Poly.Mesh>Subdivision.
Pretty neat the way it just makes a copy instead of converting the original and lets you decide the sub-d level as well.

It will also run live if you dont freeze it, so anything you do on the base will update on the subd’d version. You can animate it. Its a great feature.

So it’s like instancing then?

I didn’t know that, didn’t even think about it, but thank you for telling me - that’s just too cool!

No its not instancing.
Instancing is an identical reference to the original that you can just place somewhere else. it takes up little memory as the only difference to the original will be the location of it.

This is a new bit of geometry that is created through the subdivision of the original. With the operator running in the stack (ie not frozen) it will be reflect any animation that happens to the on the original as, effectively it is being created frame by frame.
However, you can move it about and animate it (add deformers etc) independanty, so the deformation animation will have an additive effect on top of the original’s.
