Could it be made so the forum doesn't scale down images?

So I noticed that the new forum set up will automatically resize images to fit inside the bounds of a thread panel.

Example thread here: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=814973

All those images should be 1280 wide, but the forum sizes them down.

I know in some instances someone posting a massive ass picture in a thread can be annoying as hell because it resizes the frame. But I like to be able to link people my threads on here to show them work I’ve done, and I don’t like all my images being sized down to fit inside the frame.

Could this be changed back to how it used to be?

What about if just like the opening post were allowed to do it stretch the frame size with images? I know that there is alot of other people who like to post series of images in there portfolio thread pages as I have done. And there is alot of portfolio thread pages formatted like that, but now thats all messed up.

If you click on the image, you get the full size version. The scaling down in the thread view is simply due to keeping the forum’s layout consistent.

It has always been like this.

Very few things annoy me more than having to scroll left to right on a forum to read posts, especially when my viewport is maxed out at 1920px wide, because someone has posted a massive image

…and I’m turning into a right grumpy old git and get annoyed a lot so it’s very annoying.

probably really easy to hack in greasemonkey, sadly i have no clue about programming.

The point about “destroying the layout” is, to me, overwhelmingly in-favor of keeping things the way they are now. The web-browser is either going to display a corner-slice chopped out of the image i[/i] or it’s going to somehow display the whole darned thing, wrapping everything else around it and fiddling with the color palette (in some cases) to do it. (Again, yuck.)

So… there really is a compelling technical reason for keeping what is done now. We want to see a nice thumbnail of the whole thing; and, if we wish, we want to see “the whole thing” in the best light possible.

I’m not referring to the main image at the top, I’m referring to the ones in img tags below that.

#7

Uh, in that case it’s up to you to make the images clickable to the originals. You can easily do this by placing the IMG code inside URL tags linking to the original files.

Isn’t that what portfolios are for?

Every other forum I’ve been to (and that’s a lot) gets people to post thumbnails to their images, and separate links to their full-size ones. That’s basic forum etiquette. We’re all artists. We know how to resize images and stuff. Posting a link and a smaller image is really easy (and tabs are perfect for opening them), and it saves everyone else that’s reading the text from layout problems and having to download 65megs of images some guy posted at 4k res. Yes I like art, but I don’t always have an interest in waiting for 200 images to load, just to see the one plugged on the front page.

I hope that makes sense.

Is there is any reason not to make all scaled down pictures automatically link to the full-size versions?

#10

Well, our internal system does that for images submitted to our galleries already. It doesn’t do it for people who are linking to images using IMG tags.

nods

I’m basically wondering if people would want this to happen with regular images as well, possibly with some kind of opt-in or opt-out checkbox in the user settings. It seems to me that it would be good compromise that keeps the layout from breaking and makes it easy to view the full-size version in new tabs without having to copy/paste the image url every time.
