corrective facial blend shapes

#1

whats the general workflow for corrective facial blendshapes. i know how to do it manually with say a bending arm…take 2 copies set 1 as -1 weight and paralel blend mode it etc, although i generally use PSD, but what about for faces where im actually trying to interpolate 2 or more blendshapes without the mesh going haywire.

i know i can use bones etc but theres not much information about this on the web about how to specifically correct additive blendshapes for the face

Hi.
How are you doing? I have done a project with corrective facial blendshapes before. Apply the two interfering blendshapes together ( A and B ). Save the resulting shape ( C ). Correct the shape, and save that resulting shape ( D ). Apply the two blendshapes back to the neutral model with the following values: C = -1, D = 1. Save the resulting shape ( E ). This is your corrective blendshape. Apply the blendshape when the original two blendshapes are activated. You can use an expression ( E = A * B ). That will apply the correction automatically. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Best workflow i used for activating shapes…right PSD!
but its faster since you interpolating not vertexes but numerics(shape activation weights).
like they do there
Of course another problem is availability of such tool. Three options
1)You already have it(at work maybe)
2) I heard of plugins that can do that …if i remember correctly BCS system of smth like that, not sure if they interpolating on vertexes or numerics though
3) Well…i wrote mine myself.

@ apsmith thats the formula i was looking for thanks

i also downloaded bcs a week ago which looks like the way to go for automated workflow

can someone tell me what is PSD , what does it use for ?

PSD stands for Pose Space Deformation. In general it is a corrective shape build regardless of the neutral pose. It was first pioneered at Disney : http://www.disneyanimation.com/library/poseSpaceDef.pdf

Here is a link on a good approach of PSD on Facial Setup : http://www.vimeo.com/25223035

Here is a very neat tool for creating PSD by Chad Vernon : http://www.chadvernon.com/blog/maya/free-cvshapeinverter-tool/

Sorry, although Disney deserved some credits for making it popular, but psd technique was originated from a 2000 paper called “Pose Space Deformation: A Unified Approach to Shape Interpolation and
Skeleton-Driven Deformation” by J. P. Lewis et al.

good links boucha…

On another note, is anyone using comet PSD for facial deformation?

Ive used it succesfully for fake muscle deformations, but are people actively using it in facial setups? ive been thinking fstretch looks pretty flexible but maybe alot could be done with the comet
