Copying keys in walk cycle

#1

Hi,

I am animating a charactrer walk cycle. He starts out by pushing an object and continues to take some 8 steps till he stops. So I have animated the first 2 steps where he starts pushing. Then the next 2 steps of the actual walk cycle that I need to loop once. Is there a way to copy the frames already animated and use the paste dialogue box to paste the animation keys but translated in time to achieve a smooth walk cycle?
I am finding some real difficulty with this.

Not that I know of, perhaps if he were animated on a path or you animated the walk cycle in place and then moved a master control (as in a game engine).

The best way that I have found is to animate the walk along ‘z’ (pick your favorite axis), copy all the frames of the cycle, paste them repeatedly as needed, then take all the controls that modify the direction in ‘z’ (usually feet, hips, eye target and possibly hands if they are driven by ik), go into the graph editor and slide them all so that they all get displaced on the ‘z’ axis to the proper place (so that the character is no longer walking in place). Tweak as needed. This way you don’t really have to worry about any of the animation on the x or y axis.

Hope that helps!

Hey thanks.

I knew of this one technique to copy keys. But I just wanted to know if there was a method that would copy the keys without me having to move the translate z by myself. The motion path is also a good idea, bu then I did not animate him in place. Maybe next time I will take that into consideration before I plan my animation.
