Converting bit depth for Many PNGs

#1

Hi Everyone!

I have a bit of a dilemma on my hands. I have literally thousands of .PNG files that I rendered out of 3ds Max. Unfortunately, they all have the wrong bit depth (they have 16, I need 8). I still need the alpha channel, so I made a script in Photoshop that just opened them, changed the image mode, then closed them again.

Unfortunately, this took way, way too long. I’ve tried a few batch converter programs, but none of them are spitting out the product I need. THey all either make no change to my images, eliminate the alpha channel, or reduce them to blocky Index Colours. I need to either find a faster way in Photoshop or find a really good, fast batch converter program that will reduce the bit depth while keeping the alpha channel.

I could really use your help on this one, guys. I’d be very grateful for any help you could provide.

if by 16 and 8 you mean “per rgba channel” then ThumbsPlus seems to do the job (www.cerious.com). Save time on a simple test image (rainbow cube) was maybe 1/4 second. I have noticed in past that PShop seems to think more about pngs than some other software while giving poorer compression.
