Convert black and wite layer to mask

#1

ok this may sound stupid, but i could not figure it out…
(i’m using ps CS3 with maya)

Creating a mask in photoshop is a piece of cake when you have an alpha. In my case, I have no alpha, only a B&W image. Copy pasting it from the layer into the mask does not work, as it only creates a new layer. The only way I could think of is using the clone stamp tool from the B&W layer to the mask. I’m sure there must be a better way than that, like copy pasting without creating a new layer… Any ideas ? ^^

thanks !
