Compositing/ rendering Question

#1

Hi all,
I’m using MAX, fumefx & After Effects for this project.

I have a 6 story building that needs some really thick black smoke coming out of the broken windows. I am getting a little confused about the proper work flow.

I rendered out the building (moving camera) MAX
I rendered out the smoke (fumefx)

When compositing, it doesn’t look like it’s coming out of the window as I would like it to look. So I am not sure if I should put the smoke into the CG building and at render time, make the building MATTE/SHADOW material or if there is a better way.

Also, there’s the Reflection & shadow issue as well. The building is made out of metal which is reflective. So I want to capture the shadows & reflections.

I would love to hear the way you guys would tackle this.
Thanks
Lou

I would start by opening Maya, Softimage, and After Effects. Then I would immediately close them and post this same question in the compositing and editing forum
