Hi there,

I’ve got a tutorial I created on multi-pass compositing here:
http://vfxhaiku.com/2009/10/intro-to-multi-pass-compositing/

The tutorial goes over multi-pass compositing in Fusion, but all the same concepts can be applied to After Effects.

I hope this helps!

Yes - thank you VERY much for that link. The tutorial is VERY informative!

Hmm, having composited many a 3D scene with multiple layers/passes in After Effects over the past few years, I really want to switch to Fusion after watching that  I completely got what you said about AE projects getting pretty confusing with all the precomping that you have to do sometimes.

After going to a node based compositing program, it’s hard to go back to After Effects. I still like to use After Effects for animation, though. Fusion is sorely lacking in some of AE’s basic animation toolset.

My standard workflow is to generate elements in AE, render them out, and comp them together in Fusion. It can get frustrating at times with the extra step, but overall, the faster render times and having a more sane comp in Fusion is totally worth the tradeoff

I’d love to move to Fusion as well, but in these economic times the cost is just WAY too high. AE is much more within reach.
