He more likely wanted to know which software you plan for the composite.

I just posted this same link in another thread here.

http://www.hollywoodcamerawork.us/vfx_index.html

They show how to do what you want - place a 3D object in a live-action plate.

#8

I thought what i was asking was much easier … there are plenty videos with tracking in youtube and i dont think they did it this way as your link.

Stergos.

Perhaps you should post on one of the YouTube videos - they will more than likely be able to tell you roughly how it was done.

i have already posted 2 videos above , i re-post them again :

I think he meant post a comment on YouTube asking the creator how it was done, though for at least one of those, there are two comments over a year old that were never answered, so that may not bear fruit.

Anyway, what you need is a 3d tracking program, such as PFTrack, Boujou, Syntheyes or Motion Tracker. I don’t keep track of Max, but I know Autodesk has bundled Motion Tracker with Maya 2010. Of the rest of that list, Syntheyes is the most affordable, at ~US$500. I have also heard of a freeware solution called Voodoo Tracker, but I haven’t looked into it yet, as I have easy access to PFTrack at school.

The tracking software exports an animated camera that you can import into your 3DS Max project and use to render your CG object. That render is then composited over your video footage with a compositing program such as Nuke, Shake, Fusion, or After Effects.

For more information, try searching for the term matchmoving. VFXTalk.com has a subforum devoted to the topic.

dont forget guys max has a 3d camera tracker built in . hit F1 its all in the tuts that come twith the program

Which is almost unusable.
Search for Voodoo Tracker or Icarus if you cant afford the above mentioned software packages.

Yes, that’s what I meant. Too bad one of the creators can’t make the time to help out others. There is still the other one though.

This is the way I would do it for that kind of videos:

-I convert the video in an image sequence (.tiff, .png, etc).

-Track the footage: In Boujou Import the sequence, track features, camera solve, export camera with a 3dsmax preset.

-Import the camera into your 3ds max scene, and there you go. You will probably have to move the object to match your camera.

The image sequence as a background should be there with the camera (at least it is that way in Maya)

this is very basic, but if you follow those steps you should be good to go. You can still explore the software, it has a lot of features.
