Following the new criteria set up for the challenges we will use as tocuhstones
classic scifi films.
[ul]
[li]War of the Worlds (Original)[/li][li]War of the Worlds (Remake)[/li][li]Blade I-II[/li][li]Buffy[/li][li]Star Trek II[/li][li]Indiana Jones and the Holy Grail[/li] (The shot in Raiders is a melting man, and that is another challenge)
[/ul](and if you can think of more, please DO post them)

Just to make sure it wasn’t a typo, it’s Disintegration.
As for other titles on this particular topic (Not exactly “classic”, but some great disintegration shots):
[ul]
[li]X-Men 3[/li][li]Harry Potter (I’m thinking of the end of Philosopher’s Stone with Quirrel)[/li][li]Constantine (Lots of shots in here!)[/li][/ul]
Sweet… Though you would have to wait until hours after I signed up with fxphd… I foresee using up all my leap hours very quickly this year
Sounds great!
, I love that VFx on the Blade movies, also the Xmen3 final, Lot of Particles Work in here.
The Melting man on Indy, wow that shot is amaizing, I think they use a Wax dummy for that, not sure. Could be cool and a challenge to doit on CG.
Lets see on Jan 2k7.
Merry Xmas (or Happy holydays), and a happy new year guys.

Maybe even Mars Attacks from Tim Burton. Pretty sure there where some disintegration scenes in that one.
Ok the list of films so far that we will be taking apart is:
[ul]
[li]Blade I-III[/li][li]Buffy[/li][li]Constantine (Lots of shots in here!)[/li][li]Indiana Jones and the Holy Grail[/li][li]Star Trek II [/li][li]Harry Potter (I’m thinking of the end of Philosopher’s Stone with Quirrel) [/li][li]Mars Attacks[/li][li]X-Men 3 [/li][li]War of the Worlds (Original) [/li][li]War of the Worlds (Remake) [/li][/ul](If you have any more films please post them before we close the list)
So it is time to start dusting off those DVD in your collections.
We will be going throught EACH of the films and we will discuss HOW the effects were done,
before we start the challenge.

How about the movie “Tron” where the guy is broken down by the laser one block at a time.
I think that was a major VFX back in the day.
Thanks guys for the suggestions so far:
Ok the list so far:
Note: The Mummy migh make the cut, I just need to review the movie one more time.
[ul]
[li]Blade I-III[/li][li]Buffy[/li][li]Constantine (Lots of shots in here!)[/li][li]Indiana Jones and the Holy Grail[/li][li]Star Trek II [/li][li]Harry Potter (I’m thinking of the end of Philosopher’s Stone with Quirrel) [/li][li]Mars Attacks[/li][li]Terminator 2[/li][li]Tron[/li][li]X-Men 3 [/li][li]War of the Worlds (Original) [/li][li]War of the Worlds (Remake[/li][/ul]-R
The Mummy 1 - disintegration of Imhotep when being presented with the cat
The Mummy 2 - those scorpion king´s soldiers blowing away after getting head-less … (ok, this one uses maya´s turbular field quite obviously without any default changes …
and while i dislike the movie very much, but effects are nice: Van Helsing.
Good points!
The list so far:

BTW I erased from memory Van Helsing
What were the disintegration fx in that flick?
I think vampires got a good disintegration in that. In fact I think most vampire flicks have some kind of disintegration (The girls in Interview with the Vampire turn to ash in the chimney room, I vaguely recall some in Bram Stoker’s… any in Underworld?)
My memory is terrible for these ones.
For “people falling into bits” rather than “desintegrate”, the intro to “Cube” works well…
There are some more “desintegrations” in the Cube franchise as well, some better than others…

Guys thanks for the input so far,
In the spirit of simplifying this for this mini challenge, and set some boundaries,
I want to with Disintegration simply the concept of a person just fading away, because of an external factor.
The concept of “going the pieces”, like melting will be a GREAT topic for another mini challenge.
OK to keep start organizing things I have separated the reference movies we picked so far have into different categories:
CURSES
[ul]
[li]Indiana Jones and the Holy Grail[/li][li]Harry Potter (I’m thinking of the end of Philosopher’s Stone with Quirrel) [/li][li]The Mummy Part I & II[/li][/ul]ENVIRONMENTAL CATASTROPHE
[ul]
[li]Chronicles OF Riddick[/li][li]Terminator 2[/li][li]X-Men 3 [/li][/ul]RAYGUNS
[ul]
[li]Star Trek II [/li][li]Tron[/li][li]Mars Attacks[/li][li]War of the Worlds (Original) [/li][li]War of the Worlds (Remake[/li][/ul]Vampires Deaths
[ul]
[li]Blade I-III[/li][li]Buffy[/li][li]Constantine (Lots of shots in here!)[/li][li]Van Hellsing[/li][li]Interview With The Vampire[/li][/ul]
Can you either clarify this some more, or reword it, or should I just wait until you do the official announcement?
Well I wanted to start a discussion about this BEFORE the announcement.
This thread idea is to start discussion what you guys think of this. Sometime next week Ill open a thread to discuss how this type of effect has been done in the past, and we will take apart the disintegration shots from the films on the thread.
BTW The reason I want to keep the focus more narrow is that I want more material for future mini challenges.
