Comic Book Masters FAQ

#1

Post your questions for Comic Book Masters mini challenge.

So it’s a like a “what if?” topic, right? As in, what if Ghost Rider was drawn by Jack Kirby, or what if Todd Macfarlane had his take on Superman, etc etc etc? Or, even if we feel compelled, what if Lampert drew a character of my own design?

Do we still have the option of using live-action films as a style? (What if Tim Burton designed the Hulk? What if Favreau/Granov made a Martin Manhunter movie, etc.)

#3

You can use any topic you wish, the thing is that the style has to be based on the work of a sequential art artist.

That would mean that Tim Burton is out ( since he is a animator/ director) but Mike Mignola is in.

From another thread:

I dont see why not.
The character is secondary, the style of the artist is what is important.

Yeah, I was just checking to see if the rules had changed in the interim.

Right now I have a very specific vision of what I want to do. I want to take a classic comic book superhero and reinvent it using the visual style of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies. The problem is that it’s a style you don’t really see in the comics, but at the same time it’s a style that I really gravitate towards.

#5

Keep in mind that we are celebrating Comiv book ARTSITS.
The topic is secondary.

#6

so the idea is you can do any type of character as long as its in the style of a particular comic book atrist?..

would that expand to a character of your own creation done in the style of a specific artist?

#7

Yes on both…

I wonder if Ashley Wood is enough of a “master” that I could do him? Dunno what character yet though, but I do love his robots so. I’m pretty sure he’ll be known as a master if he isn’t already.

well the challenge description says “infuential comic book artist” so i guess if he’s infulential to you then it should be okay…thats the route i took when picking an artist…

#10

Agreed, but I just hope someone picks Rob Liefeld

#11

I suppose maybe when I was 12

I need some clarification. I’m reading sculpt a character “based” on someone else’s style but I’m seeing threads where the subject is a drawing BY that person not based on that person. If that’s okay then no problem. I want to do a series of Batman sculpts but I’m finding that everyone has done Batman at some point in their career so it would be a copy of their existing design.

Lol, that was a rambling question.

#13

Either way is fine. The key is to try to emulate in 3d the 2D style of an artist.
(there is certain logic to this madness)

#14

Do cover artist work as well? I was interested in doing buffy from Jo Chen’s work.

#15

Yes, but only for cover artist who work for sequential art companies (AKA comic book covers)

So I decided I didn’t like my idea and wanted to tackle something different. I’ll be starting up a new thread, but I was wondering if Ralph Mcquarrie as an artist would be eligible?

#17

I’ve been doing more research and it doesn’t look like Mcquarrie was ever really involved in comic books. I don’t know a ton about him, so if anyone can address this question it would be apprciated. My idea was to make Ironman in his 3-P0 style, but…Anyway, I`ve got a couple other ideas as well so no biggie. But I’ll just wait for confirmation before I decide.

That would be cool, but I think he was more strictly a conceptual artist and not a sequential comic artist.

#19

Is it ok to use mannequins in zbrush 4 or i should began with zspheres

Hello. I first want to thank you, Roberto, for coming up with this awesome challenge which brought me out from lurking in the shadows of this forum and caused me to finally sign-up/participate. I just have a few questions before I start crackin’:

  1) It's not too late to join in, is it? I know the deadline is not for a few weeks, but I wasn't sure if there was a 'last call' for WIP threads.

  2) Is it possible to change entry type during the contest? I'd like to shoot for a full character, but since I'm getting started a bit late it would be great to be able to switch from single character to bust if I don't make the progress I'm hoping for.

  3) I see that most people are playing a little fast and loose with your WIP thread naming convention. Is this a deal breaker? I'd hate to get disqualified or something before I even begin working.

Thanks, again, for coming up with this topic and for clearing up these questions for me. Can't wait to start modeling hardcore.
