Combustion Performance

#1

Hi there…

I am trying to get Combustion 3.0.1 to run as fast as possible on my Mac G5… and was wondering about the correct settings to do this?

Basically this is the spec… dual 2GHZ, 4GB RAM, 160GB HD, 128Mghz Graphics, TIGER OSX…

What should I set my Cahe to? Discreet site says that Combustion can only utilize 999mb of ram on the Mac is this true?

I seem to be able to set the Cache to 100% but this only uses 2048mb of the 4gb… is this safe to do this?

Discreet say not to set this higher than 87% as this will affect other programs running… will this be the case if I am using 4gb ram?

Are there any other performace issues I could consider… thanks for your help in advance.

can anybody help please?

I don’t know about the other questions but I guess C3 cannot address more than 2 GB in this config. The same is true for AFX and Photoshop.

That is true for Windows, but i have a hard time understanding why Apple would do the same thing with their os and limit the amount of ram a program could access. For windows this limit is often frowned apon anyway.

This is a 32 bit operating system/processor limitation. Has nothing to do with Apple or Microsoft. Apps have to be rewritten/compiled for 64 bit in order to use more than 2-3 gig of ram.

i am fairly new to combustion but I have seen enough to know a couple of things. For starters I won’t run combustion ver3 on my G5. All the test I saw/performed shocked me at the poor speed and instability of ver3 on the mac. I heard that later patches helped (.2 or .3 not sure !!) At present we are using PC’s running ver4.01 and it seems much better than previous versions/configurations. Maybe this will be the same when they rlease ver4 for Mac.

The following observations are based on PC so may not help with Mac.

Because we are working at 2k RAM is a major issue and we have been using 3gb with the switch enabled in windows. Our ram is set to 87%, performance is suprisingly spritely but I have notice that I often need to flush the cache when working with comps with lots of paint strokes.
On one of the machines we actually enabled the 3gb switch even there is only 2gb in the machine and now combustion cache shows an extra 200mb or so in the available chace !!

good luck !

Thanks for everyones help with this matter…

I guess I’ll just have to work with my system the way it is… Combustion is still running faster than on our old G4 system.
