combustion materials in max

#1

Note* I thought I would post this question to combustion users, as Ive found more compositers used 3d than 3d users use compositing software. (admins: feel free to move this thread if you feel otherwise)

Im working on a broadcast project where im integrating combustion materials in a max scene before rendering out again to combustion for post.

 Im having these 2 problems:

 1. I cant easily time the animated materials in max, so sequencing events is tedious.

 2. Its almost impossible to run the camera at realtime and animate effectively, even with a pretty quick video card.

Ive thought about rendering out the combustion movie as an avi, but at that point I cant edit without re-rendering the C sequence…

 Thoughts and ideas appreciated =)

I had the same problem some months ago.
Rendering a image sequence for the texture maps worked for me. Perhaps render a tga sequence for final rendering and a jpeg sequence as a viewportproxy in max.
For timing I have used the ifl files.
After importing the sequence as a Bitmap in Max, an IFL file is created in the same directory.
You can open this with notepad.exe

Should look like this:
image001.tga 12
image002.tga

You can type in a number after each filename as a framehold duration to start the sequence at the right time. i don’t know which driver you are using (Direct3D or Open GL), but set the texture resolution to 512 or less to speed up the viewports and switch of the option “update all Materials” in the material editor.
I know that this method is very oldschool, but it worked for me.
Hope that helps
