Color profiles for look development / compositing

#1

Hi all,

I have finally gotten myself a good monitor (Dell Ultrasharp) with good color setup. I’m a bit puzzled how to use the different profiles. I am thinking for a linear workflow I should use the standard setup in all programs right until I comp, and at that point I could use the sRGB setup, or am I off the track here?

Set it to the color space of the final destination. For web that’s sRGB, for broadcast that’s Rec. 709 (similar to sRGB), for other stuff it varies depending on the workflow of the rest of the production.

Allright, sounds reasonable. Thanks

For sheer simplicity, every app will expect you to be viewing with an srgb profile. So even if youre working in linear space with linear profiles, it will still be displaying it to you in srgb.

That is true, I guess the confusion for me was that it (monitor software) doesn’t seem to choose sRGB for anything by default, eventhough it makes these choices intelligently for other things.
