Color metaball surface per particle? Vray, Mental Ray, Renderman?

I am looking at doing a shader that can see the per particle color and transfer that to the polySurface that is created when you do a particle to polygons mesh.

The metaball surface that is created is usually shaded with one shader in most cases but in this test I want to hand the per particle color over to the mesh so I can have different colors blend together as the meshes interact.

I’ve seen it done in C4D tests and Houdini but was looking at just using Vray or Rman or even Mental Ray if there is a way to create the effect in Maya.

I have some ideas but…

…Any ideas appreciated.

It’s possible out of the box with 3delight, just set your particles to blobby type and use particle color in your shader network.
Mind that one license of 3delight is free, even for commercial use .
