color grading

#1

Hi, guys!

As far as I know most serious color grading tasks are handled on Davinci or Lustre or even Flame systems. Those are expensive hardware and software solutions that give a real time feedback. But is it possible to achieve the same look and quality with offline software like Fusion or Nuke for example?
I have quite good knowledge of Fusion, and it has wonderful tools for primary and secondary grading, masking with colors, tones etc.

Apart hardware stuff, what Davinci or Lustre have over relatively cheap software solutions?

Yes. It’s quite possible. Within the dedicated systems (Lustre, Smoke, Flame, et al) they’re designed for loading in sequences and making colour corrections on a range of shots within an edl (edit decision list).

Basically the workflow and toolset for colour grading is much better designed for the job at hand.

Other than that, there is no reason why you couldn’t use Nuke, Fusion or After Effects to colour grade a film (it may take a bit longer, but still possible).

thanks earlyworm!
that clarifies the thing.
btw I had a look at your website. Some links are broken, I’m really curious to watch your show reel.

I’ve once had to correct a few shots for a commercial within Nuke before they went to the DI. In that instance I picked a hero frame which I thought was representative (colour wise) of the sequence and then compared each shot with that frame using an A/B wipe (rotating and wiping accordingly) to correct each of the other shots.

Off topic… showreel is on http://www.vimeo.com/10967063
