Collaborative 2D art project Zoom Quilt - Very Fun!

#1

Hi Everybody,
I was roaming around this site this morning: http://zoomquilt.nikkki.net/ and i thought it would be great fun to get some people together on CG networks and make our own!

Basically the way it works is, everyone does one frame each.
Frames look like this:

And the next person does a frame to go in the middle of the last using the last as a base.
So the next frame looks like this:

As you can see all the objects in the picture run on from the last (the lizard tounges, the road railing etc)

So the end result is an image that zooms in forever and ever (check out the link at the top to see their one).

So thats my idea, the more 2D artists the better! Its just a bit of fun in you spare time.
I think there needs to be a running theme throughout the quilt, like the lizard toungs in the other one, so if anyone has any ideas lay 'em out here.

I’ll be the organizer, i’ll keep everyones images on my computer and put it together in flash when its done. I’ll post it up on a special portion of my website www.tropein.co.uk when its all finished and do a ‘who did what’ in a similar way as the nikki site.

I think the transfer of PSD files via email is the best way to approach this. I will keep track of the progress, so i’ll only send the PSD to the next artist once i have the previous frame on my computer. We will sort out an order of production so that we don’t get more than one frame that follows on from another.

Obviously all the images belong to the artist and its your choice if you want to remove it from the final thing.

I think thats it, so anyone who is interested post here and also ask any questions you may have. The more the Merrier!!

Cheers
Russ

i know, i hate bumping threads, but c’mon guys this should be fun, i cant do it by myself!

#3

that looks cool, i would love to join though i dont know if my skills are that great

#4

thanks killian! glad to have you aboad! We still need some more people to help, probably five atleast. But we could start brainstorming ideas now. We need a theme to run through the whole thing. The original one had lizard tounges. I was thinking maybe a plug hole? like the first frame is some guy pulling a chain, and you can see the chain run through the entire piece. Then the last frame you see the plug being pulled out and everything is being sucked into the hole. Maybe we could have things that are being sucked towards the hole throughout. let me know what you think :stuck_out_tongue:

#5

hmm, what about if we kept it in the real word, maybe a road. then it would seem like you are travelling along it, it could branch off go through cities and country side etc.

also a rail track may work.

or:

piping
wires
plants stem? (vines)
a river?
a yellow brick road?
tenticles?

just some ideas, i dont really mind.

#6

yeah thats a good idea, like the road was going around the world or something. It could change through the different locations. thats cool. we just need some more people, not enough people look at this forum, it needs to be in the WIP forum as well or something.

by the way just out of interest have you got any of your own work i can see? my profolio is at my homepage, you can look at it by clicking my name if you want

#7

I like the road, as it could go though time as well possibly as well as to other places.

I dont really have much online, if any, as I said I dont know if I am good enough for this but would love to try. Currently I enjoy colouring sketchs of my favorite comic book artist Micheal Turner. Here are a couple I have done.

nothing special and only for fun

Oh here’s something I drew and coloured, its for a competition and could only use black and white.

(zeke is my other online name)

I hope they work i havent posted links here before

thanks for that looks pretty good, i like you choice of colours, i don’t really see myself as anything special, this is only a bit of fun, so dont worry about skills. We still need to get some more people involved, i guess the best thing we can do is wait for more replies and try to advertise a bit on other posts or maybe other sites. unless you know some more artists that might be interested.

#9

looks like a nice idea.

could you just explain it again. i dont really fully understand the whole thingy. whats gonna be in the middle wher ethe black box is?

dont know if i can take part, since studies are keeping me busy, and i wanna do next cgchallenge.

#10

Russta: yeah i guess we will have to wait, though thats not a problem.

Mordalles: Basically the back square has the next image slotted into in flash (i dont know how to do that bit though, i assume Russta knows) so you would draw one image then the next fits inside that one and so on each drawn by different people (or on a rotation i assume) until we get back to where we started and all of it is put into Flash. (i think all of that is correct)

i think its a great idea, we just need some more people to help.

(i am going to try and get back into the daily sketch forum, try and improve my skills i guess)

it works like those fold up games people play. you know where you fold the paper into three, then each person draws part of a person that leads on from the last section. You get the image with the black sqaure, shove it in photo shop, enlarge it until the black square is the size of the pic you started with, then paint your portion that leads on from the one you started with. finish off by putting the black square in the middle and cropping off the original pic. hope thats clear im not good at explaining things, ill give better instructions soon with a spep by step process with pics.

ps Welcome Mordalles, hope to have your contribution!

i bet i wouldnt have this much trouble getting a team project going if i had a CG award next to my name. I’ll get there eventually, its stuff like this that gives you the experience to get there. im only young, got plenty of time. Come on people

#13

I’d nail down a theme for the project and get one or two tiles done … then I’m sure others would be interested in jumping on board.

It’s all dependent on that first tile getting completed. Then two artist can take over … one zooming in & the other zooming out. When they are done, 2 more artists can start, etc. Or … get two separate tiles done then 4 artists can join working in and out from each set. Eventually 2 artists will have to link these two sets together with their images.

Zoomquilts are very interesting when completed. A select group of members at eatpoo.com are working on one right now. I don’t think the forum is open to general members though. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what they come up with.

#14

Thanks Kirt good ideas there. Russta do you want to do the first one, maybe based on the suggestions i made in an earlier post, then will i work on the next tile once you complete the first one.

#15

OK will do man, yeah cheers Kirt good advice. I’ll post once im done and also email you the psd, assuming you work in photoshop right?

#16

I’ll take a look at the eatpoo zoomquilt again and see if there’s anything else there that might help you guys set this one up. I believe they have a template that they are working from that includes how much the tile needs to be sized up/down for the next artist to work on.

From what I understand about it … everyone does their tile at the same size. The center section will be empty (like an image donut, if you will). Flash will perform the zoom functions so that the tiles appear seamless throughout the visual journey. Each artist really only has to worry about blending the edges of their tile with the one that comes before or after.

Hopefully this will make more sense with my next post. Can’t get the additional info right now though because my work computer firewall has “eatpoo” blocked (damn IT guys don’t know it’s an art site).

I’ll contribute as well … but it might not be for awhile. I have a full plate right now. :wip:

#17

Thanks again Kirt, i think this is the place you were talking about

#18

Yep, that’s it. Sorry, I never realized that they made the project open to the public. Originally it started as an invite only thing. I guess they invited me because I participated in the Tarot Card thing there. Unfortunately, I never got involved with it.

Now that one is starting here … sorry, I love the poo but I’m pure CGTalker to the bone.

#19

excellent, its all coming together, cheers kirt. i’ll try and do the first frame soon, im kinda busy with uni right now, but i’ll try and have it done by the end of the week. Im gonna go with the road idea and use the resolution of the frames that i’ve already posted from the other team.

#20

woah! i just figured out something that i certainly missed that is essential, all the images have to have a vanishing point right in the center of the picture. otherwise it wont work.
