Colin McRae: DiRT menus

#1

Hello everyone. I’m attempting to create a mock-up for something based on DiRT’s menu system. Because I’m basing my design on DiRT’s menus, I’d like to know how to recreate them myself. I’m new to After Effects, however. Could anyone point out to the various effects used in this video so that I have terms to google tutorials for?

For example, I know the background elements are using depth of field to be blurred out, and I know that I can recreate individual menus using 3D compositions (correct term?). But moving between menus the way DiRT does? I have no idea.

Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide. Here is a video for reference to what I’m talking about.

That looks totally doable with after effects. The menus I would create as precomps, that exist as 3D Layers in your “Master Composition”. The background arrows can be made with a particle system. If you run into issues where your particles are getting in the way of your menu layers, you might try looking into the Sparticular script from AEScripts: (http://aescripts.com/sparticular/)

For moving from menu to menu, I would use Video Copilots Suretarget plugin. http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/sure_target_2/

Binding the camera to a couple nulls will give you the flexibility to use one for suretargeting to your menu layers, and another for panning around the specific menu your viewing right then.
