"Cold Encounter" WIP

#1

Here is something I painted for a class at AIV. It was an exercise in value. I wanted to create a scene full of tension and suspense. Any help I can get would be appreciated.

Try to play more with lights. Actually you can’t clearly see how far is the dragon in the background because it is almost as black as the knight in the foreground. Anyway i like the idea!

That’s a good point. I could lower the opacity of the dragon possibly increasing the power of the blizzard and creating more depth, thank you.

I agree with the previous poster said about the dragon being too dark. The other thing I think is missing which I normally add during the value stage is more variation with textures, specular highlights. You have some highlights on the head hinting at the reptilian like skin but it looks like these details are missing from the foreleg (all the legs actually) of the dragon.
You mentioned you wanted a scene full of tension and suspense. I think you’re getting close with the tilt of the scene. But the head of the dragon being down and the rendering of the dragon head does not make it clear whether it sees our hero or not. I think there is a missed opportunity there.
Some things I really like. I like the shape of the dragon. I like the shape of the hero in the foreground. I can feel the hero’s struggle against the storm. (However, I do feel a little cheated by not seeing the hero’s legs to see his stance which could communicate even more tension.)
