colab project. please lets do this! i got a good idea

#1

I feel that i have stumbled upon a great idea for a scifi movie, short, trailer whatever. does anyone want to get serious… and do something serious… with all the trimmings… like concept art and maquettes… come on guys and gals it will give you some good experience.
if anyone is interested ill start telling the story… im afraid though… i think its so good someone will turn it into a movie and make millions.

#2

you’ve got my attention…

now detail, details
.
p.s. about the stealing script thing, you can just email it to those interested as oppose to posting it here for everyone to see.

#3

ok… what ive got is a treatment in a rough draft form… it conveys the idea… but im still working on it. so… let me get it ready to send to you… i should have it done tomorrow.
thanks for replying… by the way what tasks can you handle?

#4

just wanted to wish you luck!

i certainly wish i hadnt posted the initial story when i started the Aegis:2375 thread, who knows what’s happened to it!! (though i have a measure of faith in people on CGtalk…)

if youre really concerned about protecting your ideas (as well you should be) then i suggest you get a website up ASAP!
there are a few places that give you free space, there are template sites available for free from phpBB and you could host all the images on Photobucket. this should help reduce the overheads.

key things to remember are:

  1. send your original documents to yourself by recorded delivery (this can help if a court case arises due to copyright theft)
  2. make sure all the images for your project have some copyright info on them

im sure you’re more than aware of all this allready, but you can never be too carefull with this stuff

Good Luck!!

thanks for the info… i was gonna send the docs to myself… but i heard if a big company get their hands on it and you sue them…that thats not good enough…

#6

wont stop them, but i think it entitles you to about 3% of the profits.
best you can do without serious cash is get the name and concept out there so that people know about it, then you have a public presense, that helps.

#7

I’ve also heard that sending the docs to yourself is considered a joke in that it offers no protection. Here is a link with some info about protectng scripts:

well i dont think i care about people stealing my idea… if they want to be stupid and steel it, let them have at it… it’s probably not that good anyway. If we start some kind of production we will be a step ahead of them.

If you are like me you probably look at all these movies out there and wish you could be a part of something like that… but in the real world we must go to our silly little jobs and continue dreaming…
UNTIL NOW…(infomercial starts now) Why not start a group, a “company” if you will… with no pressure… just getting your art on…the internet makes it very convenient to do things like this. Why not pretend that we work at ILM. put up a name plate on our computer room door… JOE NECKBONE-animator. Come on you know you want to.
If I could get just a few good men together I think some magic can be made.

I’ve got the treatment for private inspection.
rough idea to follow…

The year is 2525. The world is under one government. Man is achieving anything he can dream. A gifted young man-headed for perfection… must choose between becoming a leader and becoming a savior. Or does he really have a choice? Can perfection decide between right and wrong if what’s right is wrong and what’s wrong is right?

So who’s up for it? Anyone?
I would like to make a trailer… All cg however some well placed live action might be good.
I would like to fill all spots of a production pipeline.

3d modelers
matte painters
animators
sculptors
story board artists
concept artists

I live in Scranton Pennsylvania…3 hours north or PHILY.

and if no one is up for a sci fi deal…
I have another idea about some insects that would make for a fairly ez project…

its about some insects working for the man… luring other insects into the bug zapper…
Called “when good bugs go bad” it would be quite fun to make.

Hey just dropped by to say hello.
I think if you want to see this project happen you got to start it off by yourself.
And let others see that you are serious about it all.

It is very hard to get a good team for free.
I know this for a fact, I am doing a project just like yours.
So far it’s been done pretty much all by myself.
and the only good help I get is if I pay artist that I like.

I do get many offers for free help.
But you get what you pay for, meaning not much.

If you want to see your project come to life then
you got to become the character you spoke of in your post
“A gifted young man-headed for perfection… must choose between becoming a leader and becoming a savior.”

If that is not what you are about.
Then the next best thing is to become a part of someone else’s project.
Many people here want to do the same thing you want to do.
so maybe you can help them with your ideas. and your story or
parts of your vision can be incorporated with theirs.

check out some of these projects. and talk to them maybe we can help each other.

Battery-Operated: short film (GhostFaced)

Short Film - The reality behind Lawn Gnomes (Zort)

To add to that after watching many projects like the alien short film stall and sputter, it seems it would be better to have some of the project creators unite to tell a story. That way there’s an assurance they’re motivated. Too many chiefs not enough indians might end up being a problem but it would definitely be better than one chief no indians and i’d like to see some of these projects completed.

what do you mean? Just come together first to WRITE the whole story… and see what happens? That sounds like a good idea… See I’m a bit worried. If we did that and say by chance some good story came out of it… and a movie company wants it-what if one idividual decides to call it HIS and sell it.

I would feel more comfortable having everyone who puts something in it become part owner with a writen contract. If it was protected this way, I think it would be perfect… many minds coming together to create a story… instead of just someone coming up with a lame story and then everyone produces top notch cg work.

The chances of your idea being “stolen” by Hollywood and made into a blockbuster are incredibly slim to be called impossible. The chances of anyone in Hollywood even seeing it are highly unlikely.

This is meant in no way to be a put down, etc. It’s the cold reality of the situation. Most ideas that actually make it through have been in development for 5-10 years or longer. And as we all are painfully aware, Hollywood can’t seem to stomach a new, fresh idea and only seems able to regurgitate an old sitcom, remake, or sequel.

Use this to your advantage. Hollywood is a slow, sloppy, stupid beast. Make your project and then use the finished results as your intellectual property registration. If the beast ever attempts to “steal” it, you’ll have proof of concept and execution sitting on that DVD in your safe.

I’d also like to pass on this advice that one of my teachers gave to the class. If you’re in the business to make money, to write the next Great American Novel, to be the next Stephen King, Gore Vidal, etc. Forget it. Put the pencils down now and do something else. You have to be in it for the love of the craft. For every Tom Clancy you’ve got 1000 who are just making a living. For each of those you have 1000 that are getting a crumb here and there as a hobby. And for each of those 1000, you have 1000 more that never get anything at all…

So, enjoy the project. Get it done. Do it for your own satisfaction and don’t worry about making a blockbuster or having the establishment steal your gem. Chances are you’ll do more with it than they ever would and if they try, your finished diamond in the rough will show it was yours first. But also remember that the idea has to be rather specific to really show it’s something unique. If it’s a generic idea, then you’re hard pressed to demonstrate anything other than conincidence.

Dear studiomaxer3D,

I’d be happy to give your script a once over, and give you honest feedback. I’ve actually started on two collaborative projects on here so I don’t know how much I can lend in terms of actual work but I’ll be happy to help where I can. I’ve been a MaxHead since v2.5 and love character animating so I’m sure i can help somewhere.

Like some of the other posts say we should collaborate where we can, we’re all artists here and most of us are in it for the artform, not the cash…eventhough we ALL love cash :bounce: . I’d actually be interested in seeing somewhere here with links to all the finished group project vids ppl could DL. there might be and I might have missed it, if I did plz correct me…

Sorry but I’ve gotta put in a shameless plug
thank you BOY1DA for throwing a link to the short animation thread I started. On here a few days ago… The reality behind lawn gnomes - check it out, I’ve actually just posted a revised/finalized script for anyone who wants to give me some feed back.

Studiomaxer3d U can reach me with a private message or at russell.stenberg@operamail.com if you want my help.
