Clues for the Next challenge..

Wow, that really opens up a lot of options. Great idea!

Cheers

PS: Thanks a lot for the education, szkuls. I had no idea!

Good point.
Since the CG Challenge pays the bills, I will give it a couple of weeks head start.
And we will do a soft start too. (no plug for about a week)

Alright, going to show my un-enlightened self here for a moment.

What does WETA do? I’ve herd the company name tossed around several times and know they do ā€œamazing workā€ on a variety of films, but in what capacity?

#44

Oh, just Lord of the Rings, King Kong, Narnia, and Avatar.

#45

grantmoore3d: Ooops, saw you asked what they do. They really do a lot. For LotR they pretty much did everything. I.E. Set design, props, prosthetics, costume, CG (a good deal was contracted out I think but they were the primary CG house). For Avatar I know they did a lot of set design, costumes, props, etc. and I believe that every scene with a Na’vi was worked on but I’m not sure in what capacity.

#46

Okay, so pretty much the powerhouse behind CG for a lot of films, gotchya

#47

i spent nearly all of yesterday looking over all my Lord Of The Rings art and reference books and the extended dvd’s…and I can’t choose anything…lol…there’s just so much awesome stuff

i did however do a sort of weta inspired piece the other day for fun…i did myself as an Avatar person…using my portrait from the classical portrait challenge as a starting point

but yeah…i’ll definitely be doing something LotR inspired…

#48

Very nice and open challenge subject!
I instantly thought of the Cave Troll in LotR as my choice for this challenge.

#49

hhmm question, so does this mean we choose one particular movie Weta worked on and choose either char, obj, etc that they did and remake it? Sorry if I don’t know a lot about this. But I’m interested

#50

Well I would like to focus on the WETA Wokshop.
(As in designed and built by them)
For example the AMP suit from avatar would be out , because it was designed and
built by Stan Winston studios.

#51

Awesome, can this be stretched to include stuff from Bad Taste or Dead Alive? Not really weta but a few of the founders worked on those.

#52

Why not…

#53

so is weta digital included in the ā€˜weta workshop’ umbrella?

#54

Still debating that.

I After all dont want this to become an Avatar lovefest

#55

yeh i see what you mean…

#56

So, something like the Neon Genesis Weta work would fit?

#57

As long as it is based on the design work they did, yeah.

#58

I myself do not know a lot about weta, so I would hope that a list might be put out with some examples of acceptable …stuff
Like, the sets on lovely bones…? I would have no idea if that would work : /

#59

Are things like the statue of the orc in front of Blizzard’s headquarters an option? It’s made by the Weta Workshop but it’s concept and design are Blizzard’s.

?

In any case this looks awesome. I’ll see if i have time to give it a shot.

So I take it Halo is in then?

Oh yeah- what about their future projects such as: Tintin and the Hobbit part 1- can we do things inspired by these ideas?
