cloth without 'cloth'

So a current project has taken a turn and now we’re trying to create the appearance of simulated cloth without using dynamics or nCloth.
Mostly, the items in question would be like climbing gear,harnesses, straps, knee pads, etc. I’m already using multi-layered ribbons for backpack straps but I’m hoping for some other ideas or more robust techniques.
Anyone have any bright ideas or techniques to imitate the pulling, stretching, folding effects with mundane means?
