Childhood adventures - need help

#1

Hi cgsociety community!
I love this community, and even though i always visited cgsociety for over 2 years, i just signed up today^^.

Well Now I took some photos when I’ve been in Austria and as i saw this one, i thought this photo would have some potential to tell something.
So i wanted to create a transition to a forest, because this is a completely different scenery to that old looking narrow street, but it still give a mystical feeling.
I also wanted to show a group of children sneaking out of home, to look for some adventure( as marked in the picture).
When i was that young, i Loooooved to explore such places.

But i just don’t know if i go into the right direction, when i draw the first character.
Do you guys have any certain criticism or a suggestion, how i should go on with this?

Thanks in advance

Bao

Well, I’m not super-experienced at drawing, but I think that you should probably try and blend the photo and drawing parts more, as the transition from realistic to drawn is really kind of jarring right now.

Also, when you are shading, the color changes from dark to light depending on the light source. What it look like you did for the shading on the first person is choose your colors, and then get darker, like this:

Generally, in real life, shadows get a) less saturated, and they b) change color a bit, like this:

This is for a yellow-ish light source. The highlight is a little yellower and less saturated than the base green color. The shadows then become progressively more blue-ish and less saturated.

If you compare the two color gradients, you see that although both have light/dark changes, one looks a lot more 3d and vibrant, while the other looks flat and unrealistic.

Here’s tutorial on lighting (and some other stuff) that I find very useful:

I think the concept is very cool, and I hope this helps

All the light sources from the building and lamp are either white or yellow light, yet the alley is bathed in purple and green light. Also it’s hard to say what your subject is; the child in the lower left, or the shape of the light coming from the forest… because it’s the highest contrast in the image.
