Hi,

i’m look at dropping the online flv’s in favour of Quicktime, it gives sharper images when scaled.

Check this out…

let me know if it works for you. Note: the page its not prettied up yet.

Cheers

It keeps asking me for a Plugin then it directs me to Apple QT download (wich i already have). Same thing happens on Opera and Firefox.

#3

I pressed cancel and it worked ok.

#4

Plug-in doesn’t work here.

one huge problem with quicktime is that on Vista 64-bit, the quicktime web plug-in’s buttons and timeline apears completely back and therefore it’s impossible to play or scrub video correctly. Apple obviously have no intention to fix this, it’s been that way for 3 years and Qucktime is considered obsolete

#5

Forgot to mention that im on XP64…

#6

Thanks everyone for trying it, it does help me.

Luc does vista64 have a 32 and 64 IE like xp64 professional?

just an FYI, i wouldn’t count Quicktime out yet, as they do have Quicktime X (Apple only) which is 64 bit. But that’s another thread.

But again thanks to all for your time in trying it out.

Cheers
Terry

that’s not the problem, the quicktime player’s controls do not apear in neither Firefox 32-bit or IE 32-bit on Vista 64-bit. It’s an incompatibility with Areo I think.

Well the new Quicktime X is Cocoa, It will never be available on Windows.

#8

doesn’t work for me either (keep asking for a plug-in, manual instalation -> no plugin found) win7 & firefox

#9

Its incompatibility with any 64bits Windows OS (XP and Vista).

Apple said in the past that they would not support XP64 since its an obsolete OS, but Vista is out for some years now and still no 64bits QT…

#10

Because of all the issues your having, I wont be using it, its a shame really it gives much clearer results than FLV when compressed/re-scaled.

One day someone somewhere will figure out that it actually might be in everyone’s interest (including theirs!) to get all of this stuff working together. And i don’t mean just Qt. Hey I can dream can’t I.

If you haven’t tried it out, no need, but really thanks to all those that did, I appreciate it.

Cheers
Terry

Works perfectly here (OSX user).

#12

… thumbs up for not fixing problems of 64bit OS users for 3 years now?

You OSX fanboys can truly be a pathetic bunch, I have to say.

anyway… if you start firefox (or I.E.) in compatibility mode (either XP or Vista) in win7 64bit the bar displays correctly.

And it should be perfectly clear to anyone who wouldn’t preorder an iDildo from Apple the moment they announced it, why Apple haven’t fixed this quicktime issue for all of this time.

#13

That works for me… I.E. and XP Home.

#14

nevermind.

#15

Works on Windows and Mac here… good quality. It would be nice to have this instead of Flash. Can’t seem to get this running on Linux in Firefox though.
Thanks for doing all of this Letterbox. Great for the community.

Now now gent_k… if you’re going to label someone as a fanboy you might want to do this from loftier moral grounds than the cesspit from whence your comment came from. Leave it at 4chan please.

#16

Well… now that Apple has a 64bit OS (two hundred years later) maybe they decide to make QT work on 64bit Windows.

Thank you for all your efforts Letterbox

Ok I tried at work (I was at home before) on Vista 64-bit again. The problem is the same in FireFox, it asks to install a plug-in and there is nothing to install. This may be a problem with the page, as the plug-in name looks incorrect specified

in IE (yes, 32-bit IE), sure it plays. But there the playback area at the bottom is black, as I’ve mentionned.

the issue mentioned is only on 64bit windows.

Proprietary formats, with bad portability are not ideal for web use. Like it, or not, that is what Quicktime has become. Better than 90% of all computers are Windows based, and Softimage doesn’t run on OSX natively so I highly recommend, especially for this intended purpose, finding a viable alternative.

Offline, the Quicktime player works fine for me in XP and Vista, although it’s slow and not 64bit ready. Online, the Quicktime plug-in’s have behaved poorly for me for several years now on Windows based machines of various configurations.

Apple made a big big push many years ago to open up the Quicktime format to all platforms and get it to be a standard on the web. This drive is what helped Apple attract the interest of Hollywood in the movie trailer market. Now however, they are using the little corner they built for themselves to further alternative agendas, leaving behind most all of the Quicktime users who helped to get them there in the first place. I can’t say I trust MS either, they pull similar stunts, but it just goes to show that Apple is no better when it comes to these sorts of things.

Thanks for trying at both locations Luceric, the page… i dont think it can be the page because with qt streaming, you use a qtl file which all it does in streaming cases is to point to the actual file to load, and you use apple’s own AC_Qiucktime.js to do the call.

Me, I always keep one browser for flv and the other for qt. — Apple trailers

But all technicality aside, the test pretty much has been closed, and thanks for all your help.

It’s closed as its pretty obvious too many people will have problems if i went ahead, and who needs that grief, neither you nor me

Can I say … thread closed?
