Hello everyone, I’m a brand new member of CG Society and this was one of my first submissions. Unfortunately it didn’t make it into the main gallery, so I’m taking it as a challenge to improve. So critique away, but be gentle… it’s my first time.

Don’t feel like you must render everything in a painting with full contrast. Nothing kills the artistic quality of a painting faster than that. Think about the entire image in terms of tonal composition–such as what values should each shape be, and how they contrast against each other, and how they read in the context of the overall image. Some areas aren’t supposed to have full contrast of light to dark values, and you need to stop thinking of values only in micro areas, and start thinking of the broader macro tonal composition.
