Character: Panda Hat

#1

This is just a completely random personal piece, I wanted to try my hand at a high poly 3D character, and I haven’t done any 3D outside of my job in a while. You can see my work-in-progress thread on CGtalk; HERE.

note: I didn’t model the building in the background, just the character.

I’m pretty pleased with the headphones, even though not much of the detail is visible in the scene. Take a better look HERE.

I’d really love everyone’s feedback on this, even if it’s negative. This is the first piece I’ve done which I’ve felt was worth showing off, and I’d love to try to do this sort of thing more in the future. I have some ideas I want to try out (perhaps experimenting more with the anime influence), so it would be great to use this as a learning experience and build upon what I’ve done here.

quite cool, I think a few tweaks can really get it looking great

what look are u trying to achieve, photo-realistic or cartoony?

my 2 cents, maybe the chin looks a little sharp, and the skin too pink…

the headphones look cool:thumbsup:

Hi Versiden, thanks for the feedback!

I was trying to contrast the blues in the scene with the tone of the skin, but maybe you’re right, maybe I should tone down the pink.

I’m not aiming for photo-realistic, just stylised anime-ish, with a little more realism. Hmm… interesting point about the chin though, I’ll see what it looks like with a less pointy chin.

I see by your avatar you are a headphone freak!

Posing can be everything,… you have tilted the pic which is good but if all the other stuff is straight up and down it makes everything a bit static, twist the shoulders, tilt the head, more expression in the face will help it come alive. The phones would never sit so symetrically on the shoulders and the eye pics this up as a mistake.

Real sweet pic, hope to see more!

Hey Dock.
I gotta say just checked your site out and i love your anime art style.
This picture is awsome:

Got any tips for someone who wants to get into drawing anime of this style.

Also…do you have any spare time for some various projects maybe.

Gotta love this pic too.

As for your 3d girl top of this page…she’s great too but would be cool to see more of a detailed surrounding too. Like city streets and more colour variation.

Hej, character looks good and such. But I think the image has not enough contrast and the colors are quite flat (and all in the same range), what makes it hard to read. Als maybe you could place the camera a bit different to show off the character better. (like the fact that she has a panda hat) Also I’m not to fond of the background, to simple and it maybe could use something like a big green tree. All just suggestion. Keep it up. I attached a pic with more contrast and some color correction.

Kanga - that’s a good tip about posing. I was hoping I would get away without it, but you’re probably right about it being picked up as too symetrical, and the character would look much cuter with the head tilted. I might try to do some adjustments and re-render it overnight, see how it comes out.

Loosecontrol - Thanks, I’m glad you like my art style! I can’t really suggest any simple tips other than experiment lots, and scatter your influences. Oh, and practice lots and lots (I sketch every day). I don’t really have time for projects though, sorry, my year is very busy

Roman - Hmm, that colour altered version looks interesting, but it wasn’t really what I was after. The over-solarised look was completely intentional. As for the background, originally there was a tree in the right hand side, but it was too much and distracted. The background is meant more as a gesture/suggestion than a work of art. Hmm… maybe others people prefer the higher contrast though. Thanks for the input, it’s interesting to know this.

I’m now contemplating what 3D thing to work on next… I have a couple of ideas.
