So I always considered this area to be my weakest point, but alas that light bulb has gone off and I have the next brillant short idea! However, I find myself running into the wall of designing my main characters. Thus, generally what are the “rules” most here use to create visually appealing and characters? Contrasting sizes, such as short/tall, thin/fat Ive come to learn as an important point, however what else comes to mind?
Character Design Questions
I think you can think of his/her enviroment, culture, personality and if the character is suposed to be in a more realistic world or not and maybe also backstory
Hi, Ian! I would try to stay away from stereotypes, I mean the “doll” girl, the “GI Joe” guy, the crooked nosed villain. If a character has something unique about them, it makes it more memorable, and to me, more visually appealing.
Wow, didnt expect response so quick. Still working on their backstory and doing general shapes for em now. One thing I’m wondering in the back of my mind is if given their careers choices they will be instantly disliked and I will have that much extra work to make you fall in love with them in a minute or two. You see both were born with love of being mimes. =P
In general, I’ve tried to keep the shapes on them contrasting, one having much more rounded features to reflect his softer personality (being kind and gentle) and the other being much more angular (to reflect his hard-edge’ness about it all). At some point I’ll post something in the WIP threads but keep those tips coming folk!
My friend is a character designer and does some beautiful work. He contributes model reference photos for our Open Figure Drawing Workshops on the Anat Forum. You can see his work at:
Definitely worth a look, as Hong is a very talented guy!
